Today marks a first for our family: Our baby boy just became the youngest person out of our entire brood to attain "street-legal" status at the age of 16!!!!!:abq1: :abq1: :abq1:

It's weird........the oldest girl is 25 and STILL doesn't have a driver's license. The younger one learned to drive in the Army and got her license not long after she turned 19. The oldest boy hasn't even gotten a learner's permit, and he'll be 19 himself in October. But Ben has wanted to drive since he was old enough to walk---scored his first copy of the Oregon Driver's Manual when he was still in elementary school, and for the past few months has gone out every weekend with his father, learning to drive our 5-speed Hyundai.

So, after practicing, studying, learning the mechanics and then the skills, he went and took his test today, passing easily with a 90%. Then the crowning achievment took place on the way home: his dad handed him the keys, we crawled into the back seat, and Ben proudly drove us home............and folks, I'm not kidding when I say that this kid is the smoothest shifter I've ever ridden with. His handling of the car was almost professional, his instincts are spot on, and I was comfortable with his driving before we were even a mile down the road.

Damn, it's nice to finally have another driver in the family..........and a GOOD one, no less!! CONGRATULATIONS, BEN!!! WOOOOOOOOT!!!

Now, maybe soon I'll have him teach ME how to drive a stick shift.........

Yeah, Ben was pretty nervous himself, but for some reason he seems to have gotten all the maturity that his older brother STILL lacks, and he knew that this was merely another rite of passage into adulthood that he'd have to get through. That he did it as well as he did, I think, speaks volumes for his level of commitment and his determination to succeed at anything he wants badly enough.........and that bodes very well for the future.

Yep, that's pretty much where Ben's at, too---that, and his girlfriend got HER license a few months ago. Of course, she turned 16before he did, but you know that male competitiveness!!

No problem. I'm an independent agent, but I only do commercial work... our personal lines reps deal with this stuff a lot. Call a local independent and get hooked up. But shop around still... you never know who might have the best rates for your kid.
