Unsubstantiated Internet rumors are floating out there that Pro Bowl fullback Lorenzo Neal will sign with the Raiders, though no sources are cited and, for the life of me, I can't tell where it started.

After checking into it, because this is how the Jeff Garcia-to-Oakland scenario first popped up, a few interesting things came to the surface.

I called a mutual friend in Fresno (finally, my lifelong Fresno connections have paid off at the NFL level), and he spoke with Neal (a Fresno State alum) last week. Neal told him and others he was in discussions with the Raiders.

On top of that, a source within the organization confirmed he has been discussed as a potential addition.

The move makes perfect sense. Oren O'Neal is back, but still recovering from major knee surgery. Luke Lawton is also on the payroll but isn't considered an ideal starter.Tom Cable made a point to say after the draft that fullback needed to be addressed.

Justin Griffith won't come back because the two-year Raiders starter recently signed with the Seahawks. Remember, when Neal was a free agent last year, former coach Lane Kiffin said Neal was not a fit for the zone-blocking run game?

It looks like Tom Cable thinks different.

Neal is a 16-year veteran and four-time Pro Bowler who is just one season removed from his last trip to Honolulu.

He spent last season as a backup with Baltimore, where the running backs raved about his mentoring and leadership. Neal wants a 17th season in the NFL, and Oakland would allow him to return to his homestate where he played with the Chargers from 2003-07.

If he signs indeed, he would be reunited with Raiders running backs coach Kelly Skipper, who was Neal's position coach at Fresno State a very, very long time ago.

If this move is going to be finalized, expect it before the May 8-10 minicamp.

I'd hate like hell to have to root against Lo Neal, but if he's a Raider, so be it!

I hope he finally starts showing his age if this happens.

I'll still wear my 41 powder blue, though.

I just threw up in my mouth a little. Don't do it Lo!!!!! Don't turn to the darkside!!

I don't want to root against him, I'm a total Lo pom-pom waver, but I will. I will also worry b/c with Garcia in the drivers seat and Lo by his side McFadden could have one hell of a season (well, you know , good for the raiders)

    no bueno...

His laid-back personality would totally clash with the egos in the Oakland locker room.

17 seasons is 17 seasons. The emotional impact here will be greater than the impact on the field.

From his season last year it is clear Bolts let him go at the right time. This will have about as much impact as Marlon McCree going to the Donks. Very little.

One could look at it as Lo doing us one last favor.

Even without the injuries, LT can't get anywhere near the same numbers he had with LoNeal breaking open those cavernous holes for him. Last year proved that. He's definitely missed.

He'll be useful to Oakland and you all know that someone like Lorenzo Neal has no reason not to take the deal. I just hope it doesn't lead to an effective Raiders rushing attack cause they already have the zone blocking scheme in place.

LT was injured last year. I don't know how much was proven by it.

Agreed. Sometimes you just need to move on.
Hell, someone was asking for Harrison back around draft time.

His style of blocking is still sorely missed here. But it was time to move on

I agree that our blocking sucks, but I had no problem with letting LoNeal go. It was just unfortunate that Pinnock had to have microfracture surgery, which ends so many NFL player's careers.

Hester and Tolbert suck, I still maintain that we need to acquire somebody else to block for LT.

Everyone seems to forget to factor in that LO didn't want to be here once the offense transitioned. Granted he was a blocking beast but not able to catch worth a damn and when we did give him a swing pass or run he would break off a monsterous 66 inch gain.... I say **** him peace out LO you were useful for the offense we had before not now; be a Raider LO g'head we will see how good you are at blocking when there are 3 or 4 linebackers in the backfield coming at you; they have no O-Line and his old *** isn't going to fix that.

Hester is going to get the hang of being a fullback plus the kid is awesome when running and catching. Tolbert needs to block better but is also much more of a threat in the passing/screen game; he is more of a backup scrub filling in; ala Clinton Hart.

Pinnock did do a good job in his role; is he slated to be back?

Lo might be a good coach now, but he was a back up in Baltimore. Some people need to learn its time to hang thme up.

Pinnock was released after training camp last year (i think that's when) and he was picked-up by Denver towards the end of last season. I dunno if he's still on their roster or not tho. :icon_shrug:

LOL oh yeah now I remember; Pinnock lived in the La Jolla Towers my friend is the property manager there; guess after he got waived he stoped paying rent and is being sued for a few months of rent.

I think we need to bring in a veteran fullback just to show these kids the ropes; may be worth the roster spot.... I did a quick search and Nick Goings, Panthers. Age: 31 is still out there; Panthers have always been a good running team.
