Fans and the four unhappy restricted free agents aren't the only ones who won't be at Chargers Park Wednesday when the team's three-day minicamp begins.
General manager A.J. Smith and the Chargers' entire personnel department are in Marco Island, Fla., this week getting acquainted with the draft-eligible players for 2011. The NFL's scouting meetings, at which every general manager and scout goes over the list of college players who will be seniors next year, began Monday and run through Friday.
Norv Turner's desire to have a late minicamp, in order to give some players time to rest and rehab, made for the conflict.
The team brought its scouts to San Diego last week to watch the four coaching sessions, and Smith will return from Florida a day early to catch the final practice.
The significance of the personnel people missing minicamp is negligible, though they usually attend to assist in the evaluation of new players
