LT would consider new contract offer

    By Kevin Acee

TAMPA, Fla. – LaDainian Tomlinson indicated Tuesday he would consider a new contract offer from the Chargers.

“Anything is negotiable,” Tomlinson said on ESPN's “Jim Rome is Burning” show.

Later, on Fox Sports Radio, Tomlinson said, “I think it's warranted being talked about.”

That's good news for those who want Tomlinson to stay in San Diego, since a new contract, one that offers Tomlinson less money in 2009, is what the team likely will propose to Tomlinson a few weeks from now and is his only hope of being a Charger next season.

Of course, what Tomlinson said Tuesday doesn't mean he will accept a restructured contract, which would involve a cut in base pay.

“Organizations make decisions for the business and what's best for them; I'm going to do the exact same thing,”
Tomlinson told Rome on his TV show, which was taped here. “I will talk to my family, talk to my agent and then I'm going to make the best decision that suits me.”

Tomlinson has three seasons left on the contract he signed before the 2004 season. He is due $24 million over that span, and the Chargers are considering what a soon-to-be-30 running back who has finished the last two seasons seriously injured is worth.

They have to fit his $6.725 million salary and his $8.79 million salary-cap number into their plans to extend the contracts of Philip Rivers, Antonio Gates and others.

Expanding on the conversation he had with Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith on Monday night, Tomlinson told Rome it was “a great talk, but nothing really was said as far as the possibility of trade or negotiating a new contract or anything like that.”

The likelihood of a trade is extremely remote. But if Tomlinson does not accept a restructured contract, he would be released.

Smith called Tomlinson on Monday to apologize for what he said to a San Diego Union-Tribune reporter Jan. 21. That day, asked about a statement Tomlinson made on his Web site, Smith offered a response that essentially mimicked Tomlinson's statement.

“I didn't understand the reasoning in saying that,” Tomlinson told Rome. “And I guess I did kind of take it as he was mocking me and I think a lot of people took it like that. But last night actually talking to him, he let me know that he wasn't in fact doing that; he wasn't mocking me. I took his word for it and I'm ready to move on from it.”

Tomlinson said on the Rome show and in a subsequent conversation with the Union-Tribune that Smith told him in their Monday conversation that the original newspaper report was missing elements of what he said.

“He called me to let me know what was supposed to be said in the paper,” Tomlinson said. “One thing was reported, and he let me know that another thing was supposed to be said and he did actually say he apologized for what came out, and he sounded sincere.”

(Editor's note: The Union-Tribune reported what Smith said on the topic Jan. 20 in its entirety.)

Chargers spokesman Bill Johnston said Tuesday, “A.J. said he was not misquoted.”

Smith, who declined comment Tuesday, has never denied his quote. He said Monday that, “My choice of words was inappropriate.”

Smith's intention in his quote, which he explained to Tomlinson on Monday, was to send a message to Tomlinson's agent, Tom Condon.

Tomlinson, who refused further comment about his conversation with Smith or his status with the Chargers, said he accepted the GM's apology.

“I have no hard feelings,” Tomlinson told Rome. “I understand the business, the whole side of it. I've said all along that I want to be a San Diego Charger. They drafted me and I want to play football there. And that's where I stand.”

As he did at the end of the season, Tomlinson reiterated that his focus is to try to get healthy after severely injuring his groin in the regular-season finale.

“I measure myself at the beginning of the year, training camp, and I felt as good and as fast as I've ever felt,” he said of last season. “First game, I hurt my toe, bad, and I dealt with it most of the year. And then at the end of the year, when I was getting healthy, I tear my abductor.

“And so, for me, I felt like, I don't really know to me, it was all part of the injuries. It had all to do with the injuries. I feel like if I'm healthy, I'm still able to dominate the game and be an elite player. And I'm just waiting for the opportunity to do that again.”

    Nuts 'n' Bolts

The Chargers officially announced the hiring of Mike Sullivan as co-offensive line coach. Sullivan spent the past two years coaching the line in Cleveland, where he worked under coordinator Rob Chudzinski.

Chudzinski is expected to be announced as the new tight ends coach and assistant head coach Wednesday.

Eight practice squad players signed new contracts. Linebacker Eric Bakhtiari, wide receiver Gary Banks, running back Eldra Buckley, defensive end Andre Coleman, guard Brandyn Dombrowski, cornerback Grant Mason and defensive tackle Ogemdi Nwagbuo all signed two-year deals. DeJuan Tribble, who spent the first two weeks of the season on the 53-man roster, signed a one-year contract.

ESPN has a link to the Rome interview of LT. LT said he would consider any new contract offer, but like the team looks out for the interests of the team, he would have to do the same for himself.

looks like LT is showing he wants to be a team player. Good move by him to consider restructuring his contract.

He can earn it all back with incintives. He's got millions in the bank already, he wants a SB ring or two.

IMO LT is more interested in winning a super bowl and staying in San Diego than moving on.

    Not possible...
Your house hold would be quiet.
Your VP posse would break up.
    You'd go into deep depression.
    Your organs would malfunction.

I am to you and your VP posse what heroine is to a junkie. What cheap booze is to a whino.

But with all that said.. I believe LT will be back next season.

The NFL is a business as everyone knows. You have to do whats best for the Team, and players have to do whats best for themselves. I don't blame LT for looking our for himself. But he is willing to negotiate a restructure to stay with the team and help the team get the signings it needs. This is pretty unselfish, and I don't know what else he need to do to prove to anyone that he wants to stay. Plus I think LT is the last guy on the team that needs to prove anything to us. I'm surprised how many people have turned on him.

Having an LT and Sproles is better than having a Sproles, Bennett and an unproven Rookie. Bottom line.
