IMO, it was time for Madden t go. He became more and more of an NFL schill in his final decade of broadcasting work.

The Week 17 SNF broadcast of the Chargers/Broncos serves as a perfect example. Madden clearly partcipated in an NFL-orchestrated campaign to attempt to rehabilitate Jay Cutler's image as an insufferable a-hole. Cutler's subsequent melt-down and hissy-fit when the Broncos new admin entertained a trade inquiry only proves that the spin from the broadcast booth was pure, unadulterated crap.

I won't miss Madden.... unless he's replaced with someone REALLY bad..

I will miss John.... he was the only thing that kept SNF (and MNF before) bearable with Al Michaels in the booth. :(

No offense, but I think you need to take the homer glasses off. You can't condemn a guy as a ****** announcer just because he likes a QB we happen to hate.

I thought Madden was great. Maybe not at the top of his game these last couple of years, but there are so many bad announcers that I looked forward to when he announced for our team. One of the best things about Madden if a play went right and say a safety made a great play, he would NOT be like "this guy is the best safety in the league!!! I want to lick his as*hole" like the douches on CBS. Or if a player screwed up, he wouldn't condemn them as THE reason why the team was losing or as complete scrub. He broke down plays, he explained why it worked or didn't work, who had an amazing play and who screwed up. I think as a fan you can't ask much more from an announcer. I think we are going to miss him, he knew his sh*t.

I also feel, because we are a small market team, and because we have a long history of not-winning, that announcers kind of expect us to lose or even root a bit against us. I never felt that way with Madden, like a roulette table, he had no memory... he didn't let the team's history, or even season shade his commentary. he just broke down the plays and talked about what each team had to do to win. No sometimes he rambled on, or wasn't exactly right, but he sure was a lot better than 99.99% of the announcers out there.

I have to think he saw what happened to Harry Kalas and decided he wasn't going out like that.

I liked Madden. I guess that means Chris Collingsworth will be stepping up.

What team does he homer for? In 94 Collibnsworth was mocked on Inside the NFl for saing early in the season watch out for the Chargers.

He calls it like he sees it, and many of the fans of teams dont like it because alls they want to hear is how good their team is...

You have no announcers that will give you that...

Collingsworth filled in for Madden last season for one game.

What did he say that pissed you off? He's not and east coast biased jerk like some (Tony Cornheiser).

Brett calls it quits, Madden calls it quits.

    Coincidence? I think not.

It's not so much that he homers for any one team, but he does what Al does - picks one player or one side in a game and won't shut the **** up about them alllllllllll game long.

I'd much much much prefer someone like Brian Billick or Boomer Esiason. :icon_shrug:

I liked Madden a lot at first, but I thought his schtick got tired.

    Have a great retirement John!
