Malcom Floyd could be so much more.
If not for the fact he was two games shy of being an unrestricted free agent this past offseason, there is really very little question what he could be.
“There's no doubt in my mind,” said Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith, “from what we've seen last year and this year, if he's with another football team he's a major contributor.”
Floyd could be bitter he's not making more money and making more catches. But that wouldn't be his way.
“Malcom is such a humble guy the way he goes about it,” quarterback Philip Rivers said. “He'll tell you it's lucky, some of those catches he makes.”
Said Floyd: “I'm telling you those catches are luck.”
Floyd speaks softly and hardly at all, and what does come out of his mouth is self-effacing, to put it mildly.
“I've been a part of a great team for a long time,” he said. “ I've been really lucky to be on one team going on six years. I want to be out there and be able to show everybody that I can play like a sixth-year guy.”
Six years. And yet Floyd was still a restricted free agent this year. Injured and on the practice squad most of his first two seasons, he played in four games his rookie year in 2004. Had it been six games, he would have been an unrestricted free agent this past February and likely would have been guaranteed about five or six times the $1.545 million he received as a restricted free agent.
That was an argument he and his agent tried to make to the Chargers this spring, with Floyd even skipping minicamp before deciding on the eve of offseason coaching sessions to take the restricted free-agent tender from the team because, he said, “I didn't see any positives out of missing more time.”
Mostly injury-free last year, Floyd is coming off a season in which he set career highs with 27 catches for 465 yards and four touchdowns. Of those 27 catches, eight were for at least 20 yards.
Floyd has become, maybe more so than even Vincent Jackson, the Chargers' master of the spectacular. Floyd's ability to go airborne in traffic and come down with deep passes in his triple-XL-gloved hands is stunning.
“Vincent is a great receiver,” cornerback Quentin Jammer said. “But I like Malcom. I call him unguardable. Overall, he's not at Vincent's level, but he's right there.”
It really has gotten to the point where it's only surprising when Floyd doesn't come down with the ball.
“I'm really not (ever surprised),” Rivers said of some of the improbable receptions Floyd makes. “I guess because I've been seeing him now going on six years, and it's become an everyday occurrence in practice, the catches he makes.”
While the other playmakers on the Chargers' offense are his main obstacle, injuries (Achilles', collarbone and hamstring at different times from '04 through early '06, a bad ankle sprain later in '06 and even a collapsed lung at Kansas City last December) have also kept Floyd from playing more.
“I've been fortunate that A.J. really likes me,” Floyd said. “ ... I've been so lucky — for what I've been through. Shoot, I'll take it as an opportunity, I've been a part of a great team for a long time.”

If he can stay healthy, M80 has a VJ-type of breakout year in '09. PR loves him.

How will we ever spread the ball around enough?

I think Malcom is going to have a fantastic year. Anybody know where I can get a Floyd #80 jersey? The only place I have seen is the ones you get personalized for $250 bucks. I like Malcom but not that much.

Malcom will win us some games this year, this just feels like the year we go all the way. I don't think I've ever felt this way over our team. It's not a feeling like we can do it rather I feel like it's already won. :icon_shrug:

That's fine for us as fans to feel that way, but I want the team hungry as hell for a championship. I want them to feel like they still have everything to prove & have won nothing.

Some players #'s aren't licensed for sale (Sproles wasn't until late last year - I'd been looking for 2 years and then BAM 43's everywhere)

You can try and find one of those sites that does the discount jersey's - since they're not really "official" gear sometimes they have players who aren't usually available. Plus their custom jerseys can be less expensive (but you sometimes get what ya pay for) :icon_shrug:
