Fresno State draft pick must wait for school to finish before joining veterans

SAN DIEGO – First-round draft pick Ryan Matthews will be eligible to participate in the voluntary OTA sessions next week.

The NFL prohibits rookies from joining the practices until their university’s college semesters end. Fresno State’s last day of the spring semester is Saturday.

Several rookies experienced their first practice with the rest of the team Tuesday, including Chargers draft picks Cam Thomas and Darrell Stuckey[IMG].

TROJAN PARTY: Troy isn’t the first school that comes to mind when discussing Alabama’s football programs.

The Sun Belt Conference member takes a back seat to a pair of SEC powers and another institution in the state’s biggest city.

But San Diego doesn’t have any players from the defending national champion Crimson Tide, one from their bitter rival Auburn, none from the Heart of Dixie’s third-wheel UAB and three from the Trojans.

The Chargers signed undrafted rookie linebacker Boris Lee on Monday. Lee joins another undrafted rookie from the same positional unit in Brandon Lang [IMG], already on the roster, as well as receiver Gary Banks [IMG].

The Trojans lost to Central Michigan, 44-41, in double overtime during this year’s GMAC Bowl.

BOLTS: Tight ends DajLeon Farr, Dedrick Epps and Richie Brockel stayed on the field longest, playing catch in a triangle near the far end zone. Quarterback Jonathan Crompton[IMG] also took extra work receiving snaps from under center … Darren Sproles[IMG] fielded the first punt during special teams work, followed by receiver Jeremy Williams[IMG] and cornerback Nathan Vasher[IMG] … Head Coach Norv Turner said linebacker Antwan Applewhite[IMG] is healthy and could play a big role, especially on special teams … Offensive tackle Brandyn Dombrowski[IMG] got some reps with the first team.

    PRACTICE WEATHER: 64 degrees, cloudy
