I like English but Maualuga might have been a great pick too....

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=schefter_adam&id=4520592

    10. Ohio rookies: Go back to April, to the draft's second round. Cleveland owned the second round's fourth pick, the 36th overall selection. Cincinnati owned the round's sixth overall pick, the 38th overall selection. With their pick, the Browns selected Ohio State wide receiver Brian Robiskie. With their pick, the Bengals selected USC linebacker Rey Maualuga. Now, it's still way early in their careers, and plenty can and will happen. But through three games, Robiskie has played in only one and is still looking for his first reception. Maualuga has injected the Bengals' defense with more than a dose of toughness. He has 17 tackles, one sack, two forced fumbles and one pass defensed, and he became an instant hero in Cincinnati on Sunday when he left the game versus Pittsburgh with a knee injury, limped back on to the field and helped finish off the Bengals' upset of the Steelers. Those two picks are symptomatic of the franchise's fortunes this season. Now they meet up in person.

Meanwhile - our own Stephen Cooper has 28 tackles a forced fumble and fumble recovery. Playing freaking free safety - Eric Weddle has 20 solo tackles - 3 assists - 3 passes defensed - 1 int - 1 TD - yadda, yadda, yadda.. Sorry but I am not overly impressed - he is a solid rook that brings it when he makes a tackle, just like we thought he would be. We apparently needed English a heck of a lot more than him and I am happy with that decision.

LMAO, well either way you go English looks good so far, but Maualuga is going to be a pro bowler year in and year out.

Not enough speed is horse ****, because his burst at the line is crazy and he always seems to know where to be on the field.

To much every single year is put in the 40 yard dash at the combine, however for LB's it means diddly ****. How many times do you see LB's have to run 40 yards to make a tackle down field. Even when they drop back in coverage they usually arent running 40 yards down field with a slot WR or a tailback.

Prime example (Darrius Heyward-Bey) of the 40 yard dash being the most overrated thing at the combine.

I personally think they are both going to be really good, and you will see more of English next year when Merriman is gone.

so would you be more inclined to see them run a 10 or 20 yard dash?

It's not about what I want to see, it's about the fact that the 40 yard dash is way over exagerrated every single year. And the people who tend to run the fastest typically don't amount to much.

A prime example of an ILB that's 40 times were pretty slow is Demeco Ryans...And he is one of the best LB's in the league.

Cushing's playing pretty well out in Houston too.

He's just gotta get in on the turnovers.

    It's a marathon... not a sprint.

So Maualuga's a candidate for DROY through "almost" one quarter of the season. So I guess you can lump in pretty much ever GM and coach who makes draft decisions for teams.....including the Bengals (who passed on him in round 1)...as not being believers either.

As I recall...in 2005, Shawne didn't even play until game 6 or 7. If I were going to bet on DROY, I'm still going to go with Curry...who is also looking really good in Seattle.

Maualuga is off to a nice start in filling a hole the Bengals desperately needed...but he's got a long way to go.....as does Elvis Dumvervill to get to the 34 sacks he's on pace for........and it might be jumping the gun to get your Jets vs. Broncos AFCCG tix just yet.

theres another element to a nfl player thats never brought up. How tough they are. If your a granite piece of flesh and you can run somewhat well you'll wind up being in the hall of fame. Maulaluga is tough as granite. But English has that element to him as well. It looks to me like enlish just has to get more settled and he'll catch on. The difference with maulaluga and english is english is smart. And its hurting him cause he's thinking too much.

eh he isn't doing that good.

17 total tackles (Tied for 74th in the NFL), but only 8 solo tackles (lowest among players with 17 tackles and tied for 198th in the NFL).

    Meanwhile:

    Cooper:
28 total tackles, 23 solo tackles

    Burnett:
21 total tackles, 14 solo tackles

Plus you add in that Merriman still isn't completely healthy and hasn't looked anywhere close to his former self.

actually most coaches dont time the full 40 time, they focus on the first 10 yards because that is th initial burst and after that the body just slows down.

Well in this scenario you are comparing NFL Veterans against a rookie. However, what I am talking about with Maualuga is the fact that he is a game changer, in the fact that he seems to always know where to be or always around the play.

I have a feeling he is going to be annoying as hell when we collide, kinda like Polamalu is.

Don't get these posts twisted, I am very happy with English and think he is going to be a stud as well.

English has that (former) Shawne Merriman freakishness about him. That rare combination of size, speed, burst off the edge, that will show in upcoming seasons.

Oh and just in case everyone was wanting to know, if I remember right, Paul Posluzny didn't run terribly fast either and he is a beast in Buffalo.....Although I haven't heard much about him this year.

Stats are fine but you need to see the games. Rey really only has 8 solo tackles. 15 combined with assists and he was also the one who left Willie Parker wide open on his TD catch so he is going to give up big plays too.

I always said Rey is OK, but he was overhyped last season. I said he would probably struggle this year and he is doing OK, but i havent seen their games either, Just highlights and clearly it was he that left Parker alone. Rey misses alot of tackles too so until you see the games, you really dont know how well or not he is doing.

English is going to be a fine player for us so im good with it. Dont know why we are comparing these two anyways, i dont think Rey was on our radar anyways. We passed on him and Rivera didnt talk real favorable about him.
I still want more beef in the trenches. Thats where we need to win the battles.

And again, i didnt see their game today but Rey had 1 solo tackle and 1 assist just going by stats, which dont really tell the whole story.

I am real happy with English, happier than I would be with Rey. I think we will get a real good read on how far English has come in tonight's game. A guy with a good 40 time is just a guy with a good 40 time, but a good football player is a good football player(sort of plagarize TR). However, a good football player with a good 40 time is a first round pick with a real future. The two don't collilde often enough, if they did, we could grab Usain Bolt. Fast. Nice guy. Loves his mama. Perfect name, too. Probably doesn't like contact all that much.
