McNeill getting highest tender from Chargers, too

Posted by Mike Florio on February 28, 2010 5:21 PM ET

One the same day that Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune broke the news that three key members of the Chargers -- receivers Vincent Jackson and Malcom Floyd and linebacker Shawne Merriman -- will be tendered at the highest possible level, Acee now reports that the Chargers will tender left tackle Marcus McNeill at the top level, too.

Per Acee, McNeill will get an offer that will give the Chargers a right to match and, if they don't, a first-round and third-round pick as compensation.

So if they get raided for each of those players, the Chargers will end up with five first-round picks and five third-round picks in the 2010 draft.

The San Diego Union Tribune reports the Chargers are going to make it difficult for four of their restricted free agents to leave.

Receivers Vincent Jackson and Malcom Floyd, linebacker Shawne Merriman and left tackle Marcus McNeill will also receive the high tender. Any team that wishes to sign any of these players will have to surrender a first and third round pick to sign the players. Even if a team decides to swallow the high cost, San Diego would have the right to match the offer.

The only player who could possibly attract a first and third-round pick may be Jackson.

Jackson and McNeill were expected to get the high tender. Merriman and Floyd’s designations are a bit surprising, but the Chargers value both players

I think he is the most likely to get snatched up as LT's are one of the hardest positions to fill

We won't lose him unless it's a team with a top-10 pick. Kansas City and Oakland need help at OT.

I can easily see Seattle signing him since they need an OT and they have two first round picks.

But like I said, I hope he stays. We should beat any offer given to him unless we can get a high draft pick for him.

Can we match whatever offer teams give him? RFA is sweet if so, because we can let other teams establish his market value, if AJ doesn't want to pay it...then we move on with another first and 3rd!!!

Yes, we have the option to match any offer accepted by a player. So if someone agrees to a deal, we either get top draft compensation if the player is over paid, or we match it and keep the player

Imo we have to keep McNeil and VJ at all costs. I don't want either to go to another team! Somebody might surrender the 1st and 3rd for VJ, but it would have to be a team that is desperate for WR help and can give up a 1st and 3rd. I myself am a huge VJ fan and remember he was drafted as a "sleeper" pick. Dude has far exceeded my expectations.
