    Merriman will return this weekend

As expected, the Chargers will get one of their restricted free agents back in the fold soon.

Linebacker Shawne Merriman will join the Chargers this weekend.

A source said he is considering the team's off day Sunday to sign his $3.269 million tender and report to camp. Another source said it "could possibly be sooner."

He has not informed the team of his decision, but it has been expected that he would be in at some point in the next week.

If he did not report, Merriman would almost certainly receive a letter from the Chargers informing him they planned to put him on the Roster Exempt List. Were he not to report by Aug. 20, he would be held out three games from the time he did report. That would make him ineligible for the season opener and mean he was forfeiting at least $192,000.

Merriman said last week he knows he has to get back on the field and prove he is still the player who had a league-leading 39½ sacks from 2005-07 -- before reconstructive knee surgery in 2008. Merriman returned to play last season, but while dealing with a severe foot injury and other ailments, he had four sacks in just more than 400 plays (approximately one-third of the amount he played in 2006 and ’07).

Merriman has stayed away from Chargers Park since early in the offseason, upset at his uncertain status on the team.

While saying he wanted the team to declare its intentions to not trade him, he also said last week that “At some point in time, I’ve got to make a decision that is best for everybody.”

The Chargers’ two other disgruntled restricted free agents, Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeill, remain unsigned and according to those close to them remain committed to staying away long-term.

Conflicting reports emerge regarding Shawne Merriman's arrival at camp

Posted by Mike Florio on August 11, 2010 9:51 PM ET

Earlier tonight, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman plans to sign his one-year, $3.269 million restricted free agent tender.

But now there's a conflicting report. Jason La Canfora, who replaced Schefter in 2009 as NFL Network's information man, reports that several sources close to Merriman claim that no decision has been made.

"That situation is hardly resolved yet," one source told La Canfora.

We're waitng to see what, if anything, FOX's Jay Glazer has to say about the situation, since Glazer and Merriman are widely known to be good friends. Two years ago, Merriman appeared on Glazer's Pro Football Preview on FSN. Three weeks ago, Glazer and Merriman co-hosted The Dan Patrick Show.

As a practical matter, Merriman can stay away until the eve of the regular-season opener and still pocket his full salary for 2010. We've believed for a while that he'll definitely show up by Week 1; the only question is whether he'll come in any sooner.

UPDATE: Merriman himself has now chimed in on the matter. "All reports of me reporting to camp this weekend would come from the team 'San Diego Chargers' not 'sources.'"

I want to see how he plays. We could use the old Merriman. At worst he will push the others to excel.
