Merriman decides to drop suspension appeal

    <font class="dailybody"><img width="157" height="184" align="left" title="Shawne Merriman" alt="Shawne Merriman" src="http://sports.tom.com/uimg/2006/1/17/lanqiu/2ShawneMerriman_59778.jpg" /> Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman had been leaning toward this decision for days, weighing the likelihood he could win a reversal of his suspension versus the desire to clear his name along with the question of what would be best for his team.</font>

    <font class="dailybody"> In the end, he decided Tuesday to drop the appeal of his four-game suspension for a positive drug test.</font>

    <font class="dailybody"> The NFL's leader in sacks with 8"½, Merriman will not play Sunday against Cleveland, Nov. 12 at Cincinnati, Nov. 19 at Denver or Nov. 26 against Oakland. His first game back will be Dec. 3 at Buffalo.</font>
