Shawne Merriman had been leaning toward this decision for some time, weighing the likelihood he could win a reversal of his suspension versus the desire to clear his name along with the question of what would be best for his team.

"Based on the policy," Merriman said yesterday, "it didn't matter how it got in my system."

He will address teammates early this morning and then not be allowed on team property during his suspension.
