    Merriman's future

    ESPN
    By Bill Williamson
    10 -14-2010

The pending release of linebacker Shawne Merriman in San Diego was a topic in our AFC West chat, which was held earlier Thursday.

Specifically, it was where Merriman may end up. I think Merriman could be pursued by both Denver and Oakland. I wouldn’t be shocked if he ended up in either place.

I can't imagine him going to a team that isn't a contender. I also doubt he goes to a 4-3 team, like the Raiders. I think he is going back to the East coast to play for the Steelers, Jets, Redskins, or Ravens

This guy is only concerned with money and himself. He will be close to LA or NY so he can still work on his next career.

    I have a question...

When SM get healthy, the Chargers can change the strategy and put him in active roster again? If not, why he could be released and play for other team in this season?

I'd put money on New England, the Jets, Baltimore, or Washington.

Once healthy, the Chargers must release him.

As for why can he play for another team? The Chargers used a designation that is hardly ever used, they designated him for the minor injury injured reserve, which says they will release him and let him sign with another team once he is healthy. It is different from the standard injured reserve, which would have prevented him from playing the rest of the year.

Why do u think they put this designation on him?. Why not full IR i.e. out for the season. This way (in theory) he could come back to haunt us this year nevermind future years.

Maybe AJ isn't the self serving vindictive ******* a lot of people here and in the media like to paint him as and he didn't do that because it would unnecessarily screw Merriman over by not allowing him an opportunity to play once healthy.

The only reason I can think of is that there has to be specific medical conditions that have to be met to be placed on the full IR. I would have to go read the CBA to know for sure, but that is the only reason I can think of

No they don't. He never goes on waivers, which is when a team would take over the contract. He gets outright released, which means he gets every penny the Chargers owe him, and anything he makes from another team, would be additional money

I read this on the UT not sure if it's accurate

Merriman will have to pass a physical by the Chargers in the coming weeks. When they declare him healthy, he will be waived. If he is claimed, that club will be responsible for the remainder of his $3.269 million salary. If he makes it through waivers without being claimed, the Chargers will owe him the balance of his salary even if he eventually signs with another team.

so if nobody signs him we pay him and he can go where ever he wants. We don't if he gets picked up through the waiver process

That would only make the LaVar Arrington comparison come full circle.

Maybe that is true, but Chris Mortensen was on XX Radio yesterday and said this distinction wouldn't put him on waivers, and he will be outright waived once healthy. Maybe he is wrong

    Well, Mort was wrong.

Looks like he will go on waivers and the Chargers will be able to get salary relief if another team claims him, at least if I am reading it right.

    (D) Injury Definition.
For purposes only of administering the
procedures of Reserve/Injured, a minor injury is one which renders
a player physically unable to play football for any period less than
six weeks (42 calendar days) from the date of injury. Conversely, a
major injury is one which renders a player physically unable to
play football for a minimum of six weeks (42 calendar days) from
    the date of injury.

    (G) Minor Injuries.
If a club places a player with a minor injury onto
Reserve/Injured, such player must be placed on no-recall waivers
as soon as, in the judgment of the club, he is physically able to play
football. Such players may not be reacquired by the club for the
remainder of the season, including the postseason. This definition
of a minor injury shall be applicable throughout the remainder of
the season, including postseason, even if less than six weeks
remain in a club's season. If, despite the original classification of
minor injury, the player's recovery time continues into the
following year, the waiver request must be before April 15.
So, it looks like it was determined that his injury will not keep him out for more than 6 weeks, so he didn't qualitfy for the standard IR. It also says he will go on no-recall waivers, so if someone claims him during the waiver period, the other team takes over what is remaining on his tendered salary, if he makes it through waivers, he is a UFA and the Chargers pay him the remaining part of his $3+ mil salary

I've been saying it since the second we went down this path, its 90% likely he ends up with a team we don't want him with...IE: Denver, Kansas City, Oakland, New England, Baltimore, NY Jets.....all likely landing spots. John Clayton on ESPN said just last night that New England is a likely contender for his services.

And I'm not convinced he won't make a comeback in a couple years, when he's only 28 or 29 years old.

I think he's going to Dallas to go back to his old defensive coordinator. Wade Phillips and with him he should easily slide back to form. Besides he has Ware to take the pressure off of him.

HUH? Wade was offered one of the most prestigious head coaching jobs in the NFL, there wasn't much the Chargers could have done to keep him
