The crowd cheered before, during and after he had gone one-on-one with Kelly Griffeth.
It cheered when he tore off his helmet and slammed it to the ground and screamed, “Let's go!”
As expected, linebacker Shawne Merriman's turn was the highlight of the Oklahoma Drill, the one-on-one matchup between an offensive and a defensive player that concluded yesterday's Chargers practice.
Merriman later declared victory over Griffeth, a 6-foot-4, 298-pound rookie tight end. However, Merriman never dropped Griffeth to the ground nor got to the runner moving past them. Said Merriman: “I've never lost one of those, and I probably never will.”

    Now's the time

Markus Curry has yet to play a down in a game, nor is he assured a job this year.

    cont.

But based on his play in practices and offseason workouts over the past year, the second-year cornerback has put himself in a position to win a job this training camp.

“It's definitely a lot more exciting,” Curry said. “There is more urgency in regards to every day preparing, knowing what I'm doing.”
At 5-11 and 181 pounds, Curry is not built to be an every-down corner. His size and instincts are reminiscent of Jamar Fletcher, who departed as a free agent this winter. One thing Curry seems to have over Fletcher is a penchant for being physical.
Curry, who went undrafted out of Michigan in 2005, is working with the second team. And there is a good chance Curry will fall in as the fourth corner.
“It's going to put pressure on me,” he said. “It's a big opportunity, and I'm going to take advantage of it.”
    Number game

First-round draft pick Antonio Cromartie is wearing No. 25 because the NFL has strict rules about certain positions being able to wear certain numbers. Coincidentally, Cromartie's new number is the old number worn by Fletcher, who is the brother of Cromartie's agent, Jason Fletcher.
    Lean down

Backup fullback Andrew Pinnock, who is really talented but has the misfortune of playing behind Pro Bowler Lorenzo Neal, looks as fit and trim as he has ever been in a four-year NFL career.
Pinnock, at 248 pounds with 11 percent body fat, was up to 271 pounds just four months ago. Suffice it to say that did not look pretty on a guy who is 5-10.
The weight gain was mostly because of inactivity brought about by two offseason shoulder surgeries to repair a torn labrum and shave bone spurs.
    Extra points

Defensive lineman Igor Olshansky (back), receiver Rashaun Woods (hamstring) and linebacker Donnie Edwards (back) were on the sideline yesterday. It was the second straight missed practice for Woods, acquired in a trade for defensive back Sammy Davis. Edwards' back bothered him during Saturday afternoon's practice, but coach Marty Schottenheimer did not appear worried. Today's 8 a.m. practice is closed to the public. Fans can attend the 3:20 p.m. practice. Parking is on the road behind the Holiday Inn or at the Holiday Inn on Murphy Canyon Road.

    Yep !!!

Donnie wimped out by not practicing. Maybe he still remembers UDFA Phil Bogle kicking Marcy Wiley's A.Z.Z in the Okie drill a few years ago. Marty could have lined up some scrub NFLE guy to embarASS the Ankle Biter.
