Whenever a football player puts together a breakout campaign, there is always the possibility that he will experience a major letdown the next year. This is particularly true for rookies coming back for their second season, which is why the term "sophomore slump" is so common in the sports world. Buffalo's Anthony Thomas, the 2001 Offensive Rookie of the Year as a member of the Chicago Bears , immediately comes to mind as an example of this phenomenon.

So it would be perfectly understandable if some San Diego Chargers fans are apprehensive about linebacker Shawne Merriman's upcoming sophomore season. After all, the former Maryland star led San Diego in sacks last year, was voted to the Pro Bowl, and was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year. It would take a monster effort to beat those results, plus Merriman will have the added pressure of higher expectations this season.</blockquote>
