SAN DIEGO (TICKER) —San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman and offensive tackle Marcus McNeill each underwent arthroscopic surgery in recent days, the team announced on Tuesday.

Merriman, an All-Pro selection in each of his first three seasons, went under the knife on Thursday to clean out his troublesome left knee. The surgery is expected to sideline him for four to six weeks.

Merriman, who recorded 12 1/2 sacks in 15 games this season, has collected 39 1/2 sacks over his career, including a career-high and league-leading 17 in 2006.

McNeill, who has made the Pro Bowl in each of his first two seasons, underwent an arthroscopic procedure on his shoulder last Tuesday. His recovery is expected to take two to four weeks.

A second-round selection in 2006, McNeill has yet to miss a game in his career, starting all 32 games at left tackle.

Defensive tackle Jamal Williams also is expected to undergo a procedure on both knees.

How freakin sweet would it be to get Williams back to a 2005-2006 level of play?

Is it just me or do we have a lot of guys that are banged-up from last season? I don't remember it being this bad the last couple years.

I was thinking that too. Especially during playoff time.

This is routine stuff that will set these guys up to play at full speed. No word on Gates's proposed surgery? If it isn't being played up, then maybe it's just a sharp debridement if enzymes and whirlpools didn't work. Not a big deal if that's what it is, but the Chargers treat this stuff like NSA wiretaps.
