Watching NFL Live on ESPN right now and they just announced that next up is an interview with Merriman about his rehab and 2009 expectations etc...

I know they repeat NFL Live at night (for those who cna't tune in at the moment), but it sometimes gets bumped depending on what's on primetime (baseball/basketball games or breaking news). I'll try and post a video link if I can find one later...

EDIT: Okay. so they just showed a snippet of the interview (ugh) it was basically an ad to get people to watch the 10PM PT Edition of SportsCenter "live from LA" where they will show the entire interview.

What little they did show Shawne explained why he didn't get surgery right away after the season. Now they're talking about why his being on IR made such an impact on our defense.

I tell you what. If he comes back, has double digit sacks and our D is a force. He should get DPOY. It is amazing how one player could make a difference on D.

Trumpy... You know I love you, Brutha!!!

But before I send Merriman to the glue factory, I want to see what he will do this season. I do question some things about him. Starting with the steroids situation in 06 and him refusing to get surgery when four doctors said he'll need it... but I haven't lost faith in him yet.

He's still young. Hopefully he learned through mistakes.
He is a born leader like Seau and Ray Lewis. People can say all they want about Lewis BUT the decision was made, he was found innocent, and he's done nothing but kick serious *** since then!!!

Now it's time for Shawn to be the player and leader that we know he can be!!! :bolt:

It is very misleading the way you talk about Merriman refusing to have surgery. You make it sound like Merriman missed the 08 season because he refused to have surgery, when, in fact, he refused surgery immediately before the 08 season because he wanted to play so badly. To me, this is a point in his favor. He risked everything to play the sport he loved. Unfortunately, he only lasted one game, but he showed alot of heart trying to play.

He was initially told to have surgery immediately after the 07 season, but he wanted to rehab.

I'm not as extreme as Trumpy but I feel like he owes us a season for not getting surgery immediately after the 07 season when the team recommended it.

And that was a mistake. He should have got it immediatly after the 07 season and then he might have been able to come back lat in the season. Maybe even for the playoffs.

I'm kinda with the lash on this one. Merriman was selfish in not getting his surgery earlier. He owes his teammates and his paymasters now.

I'm hopin he can bring it bigtime without the 'medical help'.

The only problem with that is he would have had to stay on roster. If he couldn't play, that spot could have been used by someone else.

Until you've suffered an injury of this kind you have no clue what your typing. Some day's you feel great then others all isn't right. Do I blame him??? no. If it heals all is good, if not, be prepared for some intense pain. Been there done that.

I'm with Hexed and LV Bolt on this one...

He would have missed 8-10 games MINIMUM had he gotten the surgery immediately after the 07 season. That's assuming his rehab went to plan.

In hindsight, we know his rehab has gone exceptionally well, but even if he'd only missed 1/2 the season he would have taken a roster spot the entire time AND would then be jumping in mid-season. It would have been at least a game or two before he was back up to football speed, and he would have been freshly back from his rehab and surgery.

He had already played successfully on the knee for 8 games in 07, so he opt'd to rehab it and give it all he had for a Super Bowl run. Maybe not the wisest decision looking back, but he's a 24 y/o kid who lives and breathes football - a sport which expects you to play tough and through injury. No selfishness in that, if anything it would just be the foolishness of youth.
