<img align="left" alt="Shawne Merriman" title="Shawne Merriman" src="http://www.bolttalk.com/images/merriman12.jpg" />On the first full day of Shawne Merriman's steroid suspension, the young linebacker's absence emboldened his teammates to take some liberties with his locker.

Merriman has already achieved such stature in the National Football League that his dressing stall carries two nameplates – one the Chargers' standard issue; the other appropriated from the Pro Bowl. Taped to them yesterday afternoon were a pair of identical signs:

    Steroid Testing This Morning

    Photo ID Required

    Somebody's idea of a joke.

In the culture of the locker room, cruelty and comedy are sometimes synonymous. Yet the issue of steroids barely raises an eyebrow anymore, much less a laugh, and seems almost as passé as Hester Prynne's scarlet letter. It is more often the subject of lame jokes than value judgments in the NFL. It is treated almost as an inconvenience instead of an infraction.
