Merriman's return should juice up Chargers 'D'

    By Adam Schefter
    NFL Analyst

(Nov. 28, 2006) -- The Chargers already were good, and now they've just gotten better.

Linebacker Shawne Merriman reported to the Chargers training facility Nov. 27, having served his four-game suspension for violating the league's steroids policy.

The NFL officially lifted the suspension Nov. 27 and Merriman will be back at practice Nov. 29. He is expected to play Dec. 3 against Buffalo, but he already began to be noticed this week.

Upon reporting to the Chargers training facility, Merriman predicted to reporters that the Chargers "are going to win the Super Bowl."

Pretty strong words coming from an even stronger player.

But with Merriman back in the lineup, the Chargers field as good of a front seven as any in football. If he thinks the Chargers are going to win the Super Bowl, it's hard to argue with him. But chances are Peyton Manning will have something to say about that.

    Back to school?
Alabama got rid of one big-name coach this week and instantly tried to hire another. Shortly after the school fired Mike Shula, it reached out to Dolphins head coach Nick Saban to see whether he would be interested in leaving Miami for Alabama, a source close to Saban said.

The school was told, in a word, no. Saban isn't going anywhere, not when he has begun to make his mark in Miami. After finishing last season with five consecutive victories, the Dolphins are on a similar roll this season. They have won four in a row and Saban is the big man in Miami's training complex.

He's not leaving for Alabama or any other college coaching job, at least not anytime soon.

One coach who could decide to leave the NFL for college is Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow, who is expected to garner interest from Arizona State and North Carolina State, two schools with coaching vacancies.

Chow constantly is on college's radar, having turned down the Kentucky job that Rich Brooks took and losing out to Walt Harris as a finalist for the job with Stanford.

But this time, Chow could have an inherent advantage with Arizona State. The school's athletic director, Lisa Love, was the associate AD at USC at a time when Chow coached there. The two developed a professional relationship that has continued to this day. There's little doubt that one of the first coaches that Love will look to is one she knows best.

    THE BIG HURT
Few teams have been racked with more injuries than the Houston Texans, who got hit with the injury bug again this weekend, losing center Mike Flanagan and quarterback Sage Rosenfels to season-ending injuries.

Already this season, the Texans have 13 players on injured reserve, including both starting defensive tackles, both starting offensive tackles, its center and its star running back Domanick Davis.

Even David Carr had a brief bout with the Texans injury bug this season.
It has gotten so bad in Houston that none of the defensive tackles on the Texans roster -- Lional Dalton, Thomas Johnson, Anthony Maddox and Cedric Killings -- was with the team in training camp.

And the injuries might not be over yet. First-round pick Mario Williams has been battling plantar fasciitis that might require surgery at the end of the season. Williams has been trying to put it off until after the season, but nobody knows whether he will be able to make it.

Knowing the Texans' history, probably not.

    NEW ORLEANS' LIGHTNING BOLT
Only one quarterback in history, Dan Marino, ever has thrown for more than 5,000 yards in one season. But New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees could make it two.

As it is, Brees is on pace to throw for 5,037 yards this season, which would be the second-highest total in NFL history, trailing only the 5,084 yards that Marino piled up in 1984.

Brees also has thrown for more than 300 yards in five games in a row, and one more game like that will tie him with Steve Young, Kurt Warner and Rich Gannon for the NFL record.

While some questioned whether Brees would be able to return this season (see Dolphins, Miami) he now has silenced any doubters.

Brees is on his way to the Pro Bowl, and he could be on his way to the record book, too.

The only thing Peyton will have to say is "Oh God, please don't hurt me Mr Merriman."

nfl should have never even suspended him. There really is something wrong or odd going on with the upstairs in the nfl. Merriman being tested like 13 times with no positives and 3 times since should be a glaring thought to the stupid nfl that someone spiked what merriman was eating. Just pizzes me off how asinine the nfl is sometimes.

stupid nfl that only cares about thier bottom line and will throw anybody under the bus to try and look good in the eyes of the crazy fans.
