No matter how good or bad you think this Charger team is, you have to agree that this victory over the Colts was a gift.

The defense played great, as did our special teams. But there is no way that the Colts should have a chance to win a game with 2 kick returns for TDs and 6 interceptions for the the Chargers.

Chalk up another half without a point.

It is tough to be so frustrated after a win, but when the best kicker in the history of the NFL misses two short field goals in order for you to 'escape' its hard to be too excited.

Thoughts? Opinions? Post em up, I can't even think anymore.

Vinateri missed a big one when we played the Pats back in 04. Doesn't kick well against the Chargers.

I like the sound of that!

Listen, every team gets a huge break to win a game, I just can't help but be stunned by this one. I love that we got a win and are alone in first. But I don't see how this game would make anyone think the Chargers are 'back'. Or that we are making a play to be considered 'elite' again. Hopefully it will be a motivational thing.

Hey, we've lost some that we should have won in recent memory. The game in Philly? A few years ago in Indy? Last year's playoff game? So it isn't like we didn't have one comin our way. I just would have loved to see more out of offense that would have made this a gimmie with all the production out of ST and D.

Well, it's not like all the breaks went our way. We did botch an extra point, which almost never happens. The Colts also had an INT in the first half that bounced off a defender's body about 50 times.

Oh, and congrats to the refs on trying to give that game to the Colts. That spot on 3rd down was a half a yard off. Good thing the spot was so obvious on replay so they could overturn it.

Good calls! That does lessen the sting a little...

But honestly only a little. When we start the second half up 23-7, we need to put it away! Have the Chargers had a single second half where they come out like gangbusters? Like Norv or anyone else on this staff has made an observation or adjustment that has opened up our O or D?

Again, trying not to be to negative after a win... obviously not doing a very good job. Here's to hoping a tough road win next week will open our eyes to this team's potential.

No doubt our second halves have sucked *** this year, especially offensively. The only games where we really did anything in the 2nd half were against Chicago, at NE (though we were down 24 at the time), and at Denver (though we were up by 20 at the time). We have blown 2nd half leads in 3 of the 4 games that we lost this year.

That is the most damning statistic for Norv and his staff IMO. How can these guys NEVER make adjustments? Can it all be blamed on Phil?

    I don't get it... :icon_shrug::icon_huh:

Hey folks- no offense, but I still think we "suck," and I am VERY happy about this win, but Norv or someone needs to figure out something so that we can put together more than 1 successful (scoring) offensive drive.

Please don't get me wrong- a soaking wet ball in our end zone slipping out of Rivers' hand is just bad luck, and so is a 29 yard FG not going through for A. Vin. All things considered, I still think our offense is not playing ANYWHERE NEAR THEIR POTENTIAL, and the Colts should have won that game with the way our offense played.

Seriously, I am so pissed, even though I know we won, I am still so upset that we weren't able to move the chains at all during the 2nd half. Can someone figure out how many 1st downs we had in the second half- how about the whole game? I swear it didn't feel like many... I know that much!

Sorry to be a downer, but I love the Chargers WAY TOO MUCH to be satisfied/ happy with a sloppy win (even against the Colts). I know a win is a win, but I hope someone can get our offense churning again. Also, how depleted were the Colts tonight? Harrison and Clark make a huge difference!

Sorry again, but I think everyone can understand where I'm coming from.

The offense mustered up 4 points (if you subtract the 6 Rivers gave to Indy on the fumble in the end zone). Four points on 6 INTs... Bad play by the offense is putting a lot of stress on the D, making them play a lot of the game. We need to work out our offensive issues fast.

We made this win. 6 Ints. 2 returns for TDs.

We made this, we did not just win this off the cuff.

11 Drives and only 3 had more then 6 plays...

We really, really need to get better control of the clock and establish better drives.....

My feelings exactly. It hurts to be so down/frustrated after a FREAKING WIN but I don't think it is crazy at all to feel this way.

You create you own luck to some degree, but kick returns for TDs are flukes to some degree. And to get 6 picks off Peyton is insane (I know we create that, but it is unheard of and partly due to a very hurt Colt offense). Given all the breaks we got, this should not have been a contest.

    On to Jax...

I agree Skuzzle, but I will say one thing, and this is NOT an excuse:

Having Hardwick out probably has messed us a tad, but not enough to squander a 23 point lead at some point!

Also, Jammer being gone probably didn't help us either, but they did have a bunch of players hurt and out also.

Aside from that- I blame the play calling when Rivers had the sausage squeeze out of his hand in our end zone. Use your RB, and get the ball out of the end zone... especially with how heavy the rain was, at the time. I wasn't at the game, but it looked like the rain was heaviest it had been all night, during those plays. That said... keep it on the ground, get the heck out of your end zone, and if you have to kick it... you're still up by 8. Instead, NO! 3 pass plays... of which one flies out of PR's hand and gets covered over for an Indy TD.

With love: WE SUCK! Norv needs to get the "O" back to fundamentals, and be safe in shaky situations. The "most uneasiest" I had been was on that drive, BEFORE, the fumble/ Indy TD. Then Norv/ PR proved to me why I should have been. The plays were dicey, the rain was pelting everything/ one, and the rock slipped out of his hand like... [someone fill in the blank for me, I'm going to get my 6th beer of the night].

Couldn't agree more man. That summed it up perfectly for me. About read my mind. We flat out didn't win but ESCAPE from that one. Man, I'm still in absolute disbelief that Vineterri missed not one but TWO field goals. Kaeding I would believe it but not Vineterri. Man, that's one of the few times I feel like a loser even after we pulled out a victory.....:icon_shrug:

You are right, we made those things happen. But any team that makes that many things happen, should put the damn game AWAY. It should not come down to the last play of the game.

Thrilled about the win, but it won't be the start of a streak if we play the same next week. Jax will not allow two kick returns and Jax will pull a Petterson on us. Phil plays the same next week and we lose, period.

Edit: and if the play calling stays the same.

A win is a win, period. The football ain't round, and sometimes the ball bounces weird. It bounced our way today.

We beat the Colts. This week, most Charger fans wouldn't have given us a chance in hell to do so. I'll take it, thanks - and now, we're all alone in the division lead.

But with all that said -

STOP WITH THE SINGLE-BACK AND SHOTGUN BULLSHIT AND KEEP LORENZO IN THE GAME.

When we're in the strong I, there isn't a team in the league that can stop us.

I agree and disagree. This team needs some 'impressive' wins and this was not it. There is fear of the players, imo, losing faith in this staff and I think they need to see what they are capable of against a good team. At the end of the year, its just another W, but I think right now this team needs more then that.

In a nutshell? You tell me at 5pm today: "The Chargers will win this game by 2 points." I'm high fiving and getting drunk. But that was about as bad a two point victory as I could imagine and that doesn't instill confidence in the locker room.

    Hopefully it starts a roll...:icon_party:

I think last week was worse. At least we had some good defensive calls and plays IMO. Last week both sides of the ball were uninspired.

Man, what the hell can ANYBODY expect? THIS WAS THE COLTS!

If I told any of you that we would come away this Sunday with a win, I would have gotten 1 of 3 responses:

    1. You're a delusional pollyanna homer
    2. There's no way in hell
    3. Any Given Sunday

I think we can all agree that no. 3 is the best of all worlds.

It's a W. We're in first place. Put it away and get ready for next week.

Some dude on the UT comments said: "A 3 yr old with a stick in the dirt can draw up better plays than that moron"

    Obviously referring to Norval Eugene.

Seriously folks- Norv calls run plays during that "backed up"/ constipated series, instead of 3 pass plays... then:

The ball stays on the ground, we probably would have gone 3 and out (I only say that because of how bad our "O" played prior), and then we punt and are still up by 8.

I blame how "close" it was on the play calling because of that B.S.

Perhaps you missed the game...half the Colt are not even playing. We have no offense, the defense can't make a stop when is has to...and just by luck, Vinatri misses a 29 yard FG...do you know how many yards they racked up on us...with four/five offensive starters out??? Not to mention four of their front seven were out by the forth quarter and we still couldn't run on them.
We DID NOT "make this win"...it was handed to us.
I'm glad we won, but make no mistake, no way this team competes with a healthy Colts team.
This team is a shell of last years.

If anything, Charger fans should know that NOTHING in the NFL is handed to you.

    Nothing.

If our defense or special teams don't make ONE of those plays, we lose.

We won because we played a more complete game than the Colts.

    Don't believe me?

Think of if Rivers threw 6 ints, Kaeding missed 2 field goals, and we allowed 2 special teams touchdowns.

What would be the reaction on this forum?

I'll take a gift like this anytime. How many times have the Bolts been on the losing end of a game like this, when all they had to do was kick a field goal to win the game (Jets playoff game anyone?) or simply hold on to an interception (Pats playoff game last year). We were due. Christ, the only reason Denver is even competitive in this division is because of two last second field goals and a missed field goal by the Raiders.

By the way, remember when Rivers was the best rated 4th quarter quarterback in the league, that seems like ages ago.

    I love this game!!!!

In football it doesn't matter, a win is a win is a win. I don't think that the Patriots cared one bit when we gifted them the playoff game. I tapered my expectation after the 1-3 start, and I am damn pleased with a win over the defending world champions. I thought that Norv called a better game, and if we cut out some of those bonehead penalties, we put together a few more solid drives. I like the way we tried to pass the ball, and the offensive line did a better job handling the pressure. I understand that the Colts were banged up, but all that matters is the W in the win column, and sole possesion of first in the West!!!!

You make my point...just think if we'd have had 6 int's...even with half their team out, they'd have smoked us...plain and simple, it wouldn't have even been close.
We didn't play a more complete game, we just had more healthy players...and allot of luck.
We may have beat the Colts tonight, but if we see them again this year, and they are healthy, you know as well as me it'll be over by halftime if our team is playing like they did tonight...or last week, or any of the other three losses.
After all the hopes based on last year, this team can be painful to watch.
