LO NEAL: The always engaging Lorenzo Neal, former Bengals fullback and current San Diego battering ram, didn’t disappoint on Wednesday’s conference call with the Cincinnati media.

Apparently Chargers kicker Nate Kaeding wandered near Neal’s phone because Neal announced, “Nate Kaeding said he wants to knock out Chad Johnson. He wants to know why you guys are laughing. He said he’s got about the same kind of chance of knocking Chad out that Chad has of knocking him out.”

Seriously, Neal, who blocked for Corey Dillon in Cincinnati in 2001 and 2002 and has made a career out of blocking for 1,000-yard backs, is working for two good ones in future Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson and tough guy Michael Turner.

“The vision, the speed, the ability to make people miss,” Neal said of Tomlinson. “He’s not a guy to slam it in for four yards and a cloud of dust like Corey and Rudi in Cincinnati. … LT is more slippery. He’d be more like a fish, trying to grab him when he comes out of the water. Smart guy, always watching film, and he wants to be great.

“Turner Burner is a little mule. He’s strong, real physical, he goes downhill. We call him ‘Shetland Pony.’ He doesn’t have any hands, he’s hooves, but he runs real hard and gets downhill.”

PITT CONNECTION: There is a decided Pittsburgh twist when the Bengals play the Chargers with both head coaches graduates of Fort Cherry High School in Greater Pittsburgh. And if the Chargers win Sunday, it gives coach Marty Schottenheimer Win No. 193, tying him with former Steelers coach Chuck Noll for fifth on the all-time list.

Here is Schottenheimer’s own definition of Marty Ball as stated in Wednesday’s conference call:
