    Nate v. Nick
For years and years, Chargers seasons ended without much question about who’d be their placekicker the following season, but Nate Kaeding’s season-ending knee injury on the opening kickoff of 2011 and Nick Novak’s performance as his replacement would suggest an intense competition for the job in 2012.

“I don’t anticipate that,” said Kaeding, asked about having to compete for a job he’s held since the Chargers drafted him in 2004. “If I’m fully healthy, like I should be, like I’m on track to be, I should come back and pick up where I left off.”

Kaeding, who suffered a torn ACL while trying to slow Minnesota’s Percy Harvin on his 103-yard touchdown return, said he’s ahead of schedule in his recovery and should be kicking later this month.

“It’s given me a little bit different perspective on the game,” said Kaeding, whose .865 percentage on regular-season field goals remains the NFL’s best of all time. “What’s happened has rejuvenated me. I’m damn proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish in my seven years here and I’m looking to take it to the next level.”

The fact that Novak proved such a solid replacement, hitting 26 of 32 field-goal tries and making good on six from 50 yards or farther, belied his past as a journeyman who hadn’t previously kicked in an NFL game 2008.

“It was important for me to prove to myself and everybody who had the write-up on me that I wasn’t acccurate or I wasn’t consistent,” said Novak, whose contract with the Chargers runs through next season. “It was important for me to get back in. The best way to do that is to do it in games.”

Optimistic aren't they? Hell bring in a third UDFA kicker, someone prove they can actually kick and kick it well

The problem with these damn kickers is that they may make all 100 kicks in camp/competition. Put them in a game and they can be a different kicker. Give them a GW FG attempt and they are Manson.

Draft a kicker in the first or second round, there should be plenty of good ones available...

Who cares about the kicker. This is the least of my worries. Either one is serviceable but they both choke at really inopportune times.

The kicker is the reason why we didn't make the playoffs. Bring Kaeding back.

Weren't his 3 missed Figgies against the Jits the reason we didn't go past the 1st rd in '09 ? :whistling:

K Nate Kaeding believes he will not have to compete for a job next season with K Nick Novak. “I don’t anticipate it,” Kaeding said. “If I’m fully healthy, like I should be, I should come back and pick up where I left off.” Kaeding tore his ACL on the first play of the season and was placed on IR. Novak made 27 of 34 field goals subbing for Kaeding. The Chargers have not said if the job is Novak's to keep. Chargers RapidReports

    I just have one question:

Would Nate Kaeding have been caught on camera, taking a leak on the sidelines in front of 50 million TV viewers?

May the classiest (AND most accurate) kicker win the job in '12.

After having to endure that game, I think I'd rather he hadn't bothered.

Let's consider one thing. I was in the stadium that game as I am almost every game and had to do the "walk of shame". I'd still take that over what we had this year.

    It's a brutal situation:

If you keep Novak, everyone's going to say:
"Are you f***ing kidding me?!? You got rid of the most accurate kicker in NFL history?!?"

If you keep Kaeding--and he misses a big field goal, in the playoffs--everyone's going to say:
"Are you f***ing kidding me?!? You knew he was a head case in playoff games!!!"

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Glad this decision's not on me.
If I had choose, though...well, if it were mid-October, when Novak was 11 for 11,
yeah, I'd have said "Keep him!"

But Novak was only 16 for 23 after that...(under 70%) making 79.4% overall...
good, but not so good that I could justify replacing Kaeding's 86.5.

Some would argue that Novak's lack of playoff numbers is actually a plus,
since an unknown is better than Nate's known playoff choking...which makes SOME sense.

Rivers fumbling the snap in the KC game is the reason we're not in the playoffs

If any of you think this season boils down to 1 missed fg or one fumbled snap then you weren't paying attention. EVERYONE is responsible for the TEAM not making the playoffs. They ALL failed.

I'd get rid of both of them and draft someone with a stronger leg.

Both are serviceable.. that's it. I'd trust Novak more though if it comes to a pressure kick in the playoffs. Nate has failed us far too often. Like RTL said would be good to have someone with a stronger leg. There are lots of kickers who can make the 40 yds in easy like our 2.
