National City has dropped its proposal to build the Chargers a new stadium, city officials said yesterday.

Last year, after San Diego officials said they were not going to work with the team to build a new stadium, National City was the first city in the county to offer a plan. Yesterday, Mayor Ron Morrison said city officials realized there was not enough regional support for their long-shot bid and decided to step aside.

"From Day One, I knew it would be an uphill battle because I've worked with local governments for a long time," Morrison said. "This is a very fast process, and local government isn't used to moving very fast."
