Anymore, the first decision of any NFL game is not as simple as heads or tails. For the first time this season, whoever wins the coin toss also must choose whether to take the ball or defer to the second half. What to do, what to do? At home, I would rather our defense go out first, just to give our crowd a chance to get into it,” said Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson. “Usually when we go out there, the crowd has to be quiet. On the road, I'd rather we (offense) go out first. We score on them, the pressure's now on their offense and their crowd really can't get into it.”

Tomlinson's one of the Chargers' captains, all of whom are sent out to the center of the field for the coin-toss ceremony that's suddenly taken on strategic importance. The Chargers even used the preseason to test the new rule, winning all four coin flips, kicking off twice and receiving twice at game's beginning.
“The change in the rule is interesting,” coach Norv Turner said. “We've done both. We took the ball when we took the toss and we deferred, and it's something I think we'll do both of during the season. Sometimes we'll want the ball based on where we're playing and matchups and other times we'll choose to defer.
“Under the old rule, you'd sit there and say I hope we win the toss because you want the ball and other times where you hope they win the toss because I'd like to have the ball the second half.”
For the record, duties for calling the toss generally fall to special teams captain Kassim Osgood, partly because a couple of his co-captains aren't interested in the gig.
“I am definitely not the guy,” said the otherwise fearless Shawne Merriman, evidently not the most prescient of players. “I don't want to be that guy and they (teammates) don't want me doing it.”
    Tomlinson?
“I don't even want to be involved,” he said. “I just want to stand out there and look at the show.”
Osgood does have some impartiality going for him. Whether the Chargers kick off or receive at the start of each half, he'll be on the field. When the call is left to him, though, he is predictable. Heads. Every time. “It's in the Bible,” said Osgood. “The Lord will make you the head and not the tail.”

Said Osgood. “The Lord will make you the head and not the tail.”
