    NEW YORK (AP)

The players' union has approved a rule change that will allow one designated player to return from injured reserve and play this season.

The NFL Players Association also agreed to move the league's trading deadline back two weeks to after games in Week 8.

NFL owners voted for both changes in May. But the union had to sign off on them and did so Thursday, six days before the regular season kicks off.

One ''marquee'' player placed on injured reserve will be able to return to practice after the sixth week of the schedule and to the lineup after the eighth week. That player must be on the 53-man roster after the final preseason cut, which comes Friday.

Rule change benefits Chargers with Brown

Team can place wide receiver on IR, activate him later in year

The Chargers were ready to carry wide receiver Vincent Brown on their 53-man roster until he returned to health.

    Now, they won't have to.

The NFL Players' Association agreed to pair of rule changes Thursday that go into effect this season. The league's trade deadline will be pushed from after the Tuesday after Week 6 to Week 8, and teams can place a player on injured reserve with a "major" injury and activate him later in the year.

The latter rule suits the Chargers' circumstances.

Brown suffered a broken ankle Aug. 18 against the Cowboys. The 2011 third-round pick had surgery the next day and is expected to miss at least eight weeks.

Any football-related injury that takes at least six weeks to recover from qualifies as major under the new rule, so Brown is eligible.

The team has the option to carry Brown on injured reserve and reactivate him when he's ready, not costing them a 53-man roster spot in the interim.

Teams must cut their rosters by6 p.m. Friday when the league reduces the maximum roster size from 75 to 53 players.

The earliest a player can be placed on injured reserve is Sept. 4 at 1 p.m, so if the Chargers are to exercise the new IR rule with Brown, they'll first have to keep him aboard Friday's original 53-man roster.

Only one player per team can receive the IR designation a season.

While the Chargers' were aware of the possibility the rule could be passed, the news Thursday was not considered a formality.

Brown is a pivotal piece to the Chargers' depth at wide receiver. In four starts as a rookie, he had 13 receptions, 234 yards and a touchdown despite having an abridged offseason.
