CHARGERS: Weddle, Bigby clicking in secondary

SAN DIEGO ---- Eric Weddle has worked with several different strong safeties. The All-Pro free safety has lined up next to five since becoming the Chargers' starter in 2008, a whopping total considering how vital chemistry is to the last line of defense.
Atari Bigby will be the sixth.
Bob Sanders was the fifth, and the pair spent every free moment of practice behind the defense, dissecting plays while figuring out how best to work together. The two spent hours together that camp, only to have that time go for naught when Sanders went on injured reserve two games into the season.
Weddle's best friend, Steve Gregory, took over, so there was no need for another round of get-to-know-yous.
This training camp, there is. Gregory left for New England and Bigby was signed to take his place, meaning Weddle once again had to start from scratch.
After an offseason's worth of team activities and two full weeks of camp, the two are making hay.
"We've really hit it off," Weddle said. "The transition to another strong safety has been as smooth as possible."
Bigby has gone all-in, and it's starting to show. The veteran, who played with Green Bay and Seattle in recent seasons, seems to have found a home as the secondary's big hitter. He's able to play that role and take the risks necessary to do so thanks to Weddle's ability to play deep.
Learning tendencies and understanding how the other thinks takes time, but the offseason accelerated that. They're on to the next step heading into Saturday's exhibition game against Dallas.
"The comfort level is high, and right now we're testing our limitations to see what we can and can't do," Bigby said.
Weddle has been through the chemistry building several times and ranks this one among the easiest. The two frequently corresponded during the offseason. There was effort on both sides, which took the edge off Weddle having to adjust to his third strong safety in less than a year.
The key components: their personalities are so similar, and neither person gets offended easily.
"Every friendship is different, and it starts with learning their personality and how they like to work," Weddle said. "You don't want to overstep your boundaries and push him the wrong way. You learn something new about each other every day, and in the long run it makes for a better combo.
"It's been easy because we mesh really well. We're both outgoing and open to criticism, and we both want to be great. When you have that, it's easy to communicate. I don't worry about what I say to him or if he'll be offended by a critique. It's all for the greater good. We know how good we can be, and this period is about trying to make the most out of the day."
In a perfect world, Bigby would be free to play the run and go for the big hit while Weddle plays ball-hawk in the back. Optimism is high that such teamwork will happen and aggressiveness will reign in coordinator John Pagano's scheme.
Silence is the first sign significant progress is being made.
"It's starting to get to the point where we don't have to talk anymore. I can just feel his presence," Bigby said. "The next step is consistency. If we can establish that before the regular season, we'll be as good as I know we can be."

If he plays as "good" as Gregory but can hit the snot out of people then it's an upgrade.

A rookie safety is not something you want to see at this point. Maybe, toward the latter part of the season he'll get more time on the field.

Bigby is 7 years in so he better be able to hold down his position. Pags is the key and he can unlock these guys to be one hell of a defense and I say live by the blitz, die by the blitz. It's worked for the Stillers and Ravens and they have the shiny shyte to prove it.

I'd still like to see Taylor though. His hard hitting attributes could really help this team in blitzing packages..

Knowing our luck, Drug Tests will be released before the season opener and Bigby will test positive for Mary Jane ;)
