Sounds like a huge overpaying grab your ankles trade is now necessary to keep this season afloat.

Said it 20 times, it was stupid to let both Phillips and Barnes walk.

Yeah, it's not like we managed to win the game or bring pressure after Freeney went out. He was the cornerstone of the defense. Everything just crumbled without him.

Big blow to a D already having trouble with pass rush. Letting Barnes go is looking bad now.

Opponents will game plan a bit differently without Freeney in. Hopefully you're right: Hopefully Williams will be every bit as good as Freeney. But I doubt it.

I don't get to agree with you often, but I especially hated to see this D lose Phillips...did not agree with that release...
experienced, played hard, had attitude. I liked Barnes too, but Shaun gave this team so much...

Yep both Phillips and Barnes signed contracts in the neighborhood of $1mil/yr. Seems like it would have been reasonable, cap-wise, to keep one of those guys on the payroll. Ah well, 2nd guessing this now ain't gonna do ****. We're very thin at weakside OLB--let's see how TT responds to the situation.

There's no guarantee that Phillips would have re-signed with us. He wanted to go to a contender, and Denver looked like the better bet.

Obviously none of us was behind the scenes...re. what was offered, etc.,
(I had the sense the Chargers didn't try as hard as I'd have wanted to re-sign him, but that's just a guess)
but your point is well-taken...Phillips said he took less to be a Bronco...

Losing Barnes was absurd from the get-go, especially as little as he signed for and how he's a perfect compliment for JJ
The Chargers will have to depend on English (who is showing flashes) and either Thomas Keiser or Tourek Williams. The team has been successful manufacturing pass rush from a mix of locations and places, and they still have a decent DL, but Pagano will really have to earn his salary.

For what it's worth... Freeney might not be out on IR... hearing conflicting reports but Gehlken usually has the most official word...

UTgehlken: Chargers source confirms torn quad for outside linebacker Dwight Freeney. "What that means is still being determined" re: timetable. (5 minutes ago from TweetDeck)

Hope his injury is not season ending, I really want to see him get a chance to sack #18

Well next man up. Johnson, Williams, and Keiser have to step up.

Or we could use more 4 down linemen sets and hope Jarius Wynn can do something. Might have to make a practice squad steal or put a trade in.

Only available guys would be Mark Anderson, Marcus Bernard, or Aaron Maybin.

No official word from the Chargers than Freeney is out for the season, although it seems highly likely and many sites are reporting it as a done deal. Last I heard a second opinion was in the works and a decision should be made by today (I'd guess at McCoy's 1pm presser) on what direction they'll take.

I see it as a good sign that they're taking some time before putting him on IR and specifically NOT saying he's out but it's being evaluated - maaaaaybe we'll get him back *fingerscrossed*

If Freeney is truly lost for the rest of the season, who could be the best available OLB out there? Free Agents?

Was that an actual hold on Freeney when he got tackled? Or was the ref right in picking up that flag?

Usually teams tend to hold onto their pass rushers much like their O linemen, I do expect Keiser to be activated with possibly bringing back Beltre.

I agree wth Supercharger, I would like to see a lot more 4-3 under using Wynn. Time for Reyes and Luiget to step up big time.

I'd imagine they're exploring all their options, I figure they seeing where they are with Floyd and Ingram before they attempt to use the designated to return or just I R him

Although Merriman (although retired) was practically begging for a job on total access a couple weeks ago, I'd be interested in bringing him back. It wouldn't be any worse than the mess we have right now.

There really isn't anyone out there

BFTB suggested a trade for Mathias Kiwanuka
I don't think there's anyone really in the FA Market. I'd activate Keiser and rotate him/Williams/English to see if we can get anything. Throw things against the wall see what sticks

^^^ That's what I thought, since I haven't heard a whole lot of names come up or a big line of applicants at the Human Resources dept. responding to the Craigslist ad looking for an OLB...

Our options are to either activate Thomas Keiser, and add him to the rotation of Jarret Johnson, Larry English, and Tourek Williams.

We could also move to a multiple 4-3 front, try and get Jarius Wynn to the QB.

Or we could sign a free agent -- Mark Anderson, Marcus Bernard, Aaron Maybin and Shawne Merriman might be our best options, sadly.

Or we could steal a player from a practice squad -- Travis Long, Chase Thomas, Jason Vega are probably best options.

Or we could cook up a trade. Maybe Ryan Grigson likes Tom Telesco that much he'll trade us Cam Johnson, but doubt it seeing how the Colts just traded for him. But, O'Brien Schofield, drafted by Ken Whisenhunt and his staff has look re-surged in Seattle, and Bruce Irvin is returning soon from suspension.
