Chargers say it's just not feasible

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell raised the possibility Thursday that the renovation of Qualcomm Stadium is one way to keep the Chargers in San Diego.

He must've missed the note from the Chargers ruling out that option.

Mark Fabiani, the longtime point person for the team's stadium search, said Thursday night that the renovation Goodell suggested is simply not possible. The Chargers, who contend their aging facility makes them less competitive in the league, are looking for a new location in San Diego County.

Rick Horrow, host of a sports business show televised on the cable Versus network, questioned Goodell Thursday about the state of the NFL for an interview to be aired next week. In his response, Goodell discussed the Chargers' efforts in San Diego.

“The team has been successful there,” he said, according to a transcript e-mailed to media outlets by Horrow's publicist. “They have their challenges as (do) other markets. It's clear the stadium needs to be either completely renovated or a new stadium built in (San Diego).”

Asked about Goodell's reference to renovation, Fabiani said, “It's just not feasible, either technically or financially, and that's something that has been proven over and over again by anyone who has looked at it over the years.”

Fabiani said consultants for the team and the city independently concluded in 2002 and 2003 that renovating Qualcomm Stadium would cost as much as building a new stadium.

He added that even when the team considered building a new stadium on the site – an idea that has since been abandoned – the plan was to build it in a corner of the 166-acre Mission Valley site to allow related development.

“If you leave the stadium right where it is, there's no way to do much development around it, even if it was a good idea,” Fabiani said.

With that statement, Goodell shows just how much thought he puts into keeping the team in SD. Nothing but lip service.

The more I hear about Roger Goodell, the more I miss Pete Rozelle.

Goodell is a douchebag. Perhaps a very high quality, expensive douchebag, but a douchebag nonetheless.

Does anyone else find it Ironic he wants fans to pay for a rennovation, or build NFL stadiums, but won't lift blackouts on games when they are 5K shy of selling out?

"Mr. Goodell? Any truth to the rumor that you're in the process of developing a new logo for the Office of the Commissioner, based on the prototype below?"
