It’s never, ever safe to say the Chargers will ignore a position in the draft.

With kickers and punters, it’s pretty darn close.

San Diego has itself an embarrassment of riches at the key special teams spots, what with an elite punter in Mike Scifres and a roster jam at kicker between Nate Kaeding and Nick Novak.

Scifres, 31, signed a five-year extension last year, and again, he’s among the better legs in the league. He took a career-low 47 punts for a career-high 47.5-yard average in 2011.

So, the Chargers are good there.

At kicker, Kaeding, coming off knee surgery, missed all but the opening kickoff last season. He’s out to prove he’s back to form after Novak, his replacement, proved himself an NFL-caliber kicker in his absence.

With both players under contract through 2012, the Chargers’ plan is to protect themselves, letting the situation play out in camp before releasing before the season’s start.

San Diego hasn’t drafted a kicker since Kurt Smith in the sixth round of 2006. Scifres, taken in the fifth round in 2003, was the last punter the team drafted.

San Diego State’s Brian Stahovich, regarded with his directional placement, is toward the top of a strong 2012 punter class. One league source speculated Wednesday that at least four teams could be in the market for a punter.

The headliners in the class include Cal’s Bryan Anger, Georgia’s Drew Butler and Florida State’s Shaun Powell.

Randy Bullock of Texas A&M will likely be the top kicker selected. He hit 29 of 33 field goal attempts last season as a first-team All-American.

And with the kickoff spot moved five yards closer to the end zone in 2011, the “kickoff specialist” role of the past essentially has been rendered obsolete.NFL opportunities for kickers — and punters, for that matter — aren’t a dime a dozen. They never have been.

“It’s tough,” Bullock said at the combine, “but at the same time, I think I have what it takes. Draft day I might not get a phone call, but I think I’ll get an opportunity to go to camp somewhere and compete for a job.”

Other kicker notables are Danny Hrapmann (Southern Miss), David Teggart (Connecticut) and Blair Walsh (Georgia). Walsh had a fine three-year start to his career before a 21 of 35 unraveling on field goals as a senior.

Let's write an article about a position that the Chargers won't be addressing in this year's draft.......... makes sense.
