Titans center Kevin Mawae and tackle David Stewart have been fined by the NFL for what the league determined to be excessive hits from last Sunday's game against the Chargers, the big hit involving a block on Merriman.

Mawae was fined $5,000 for unnecessary roughness because the league said he struck his opponent (Merriman) late on a pass play. Stewart was fined $12,500 for two unnecessary roughness penalties – for striking an opponent (Merriman) late on a pass play and shoving another opponent late on another pass play.

Mawae and Stewart combined to block Merriman in the second quarter of Sunday's 23-17 win by the Chargers, knocking him out of the game with a knee injury.

Merriman accused the players of hitting hit with a cheap shot, though neither player was flagged in the game.

Mawae had not been made aware of the fine during the media's locker room availability today, and could not immediately be reached for comment. He defended himself and Stewart earlier in the week.

"The game is a violent game and I understand guys can get hurt playing this game. Therefore I would never intentionally try to hurt somebody,'' Mawae said Wednesday. "I understand that (Merriman) thinks I took a cheap shot on him. But it is what it is. I'm sorry that he got hurt -- there was no intention by it. - If the NFL deems it a cheap shot I will pay whatever fine I have to pay."

Merriman has been ruled out for Sunday's game against Detroit with the injury.

Chargers linebacker Shaun Phillips was fined $7,500 for a horse collar tackle of Titans running back Chris Brown.
