One of the Chargers’ long-time starters is stepping away from the game.

Center Nick Hardwick will announce his retirement on Tuesday, Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. The 33-year-old Hardwick informed the newspaper of his plans.

The Chargers will hold a press conference tomorrow, the Union-Tribune reported.

A 136-game starter for San Diego, Hardwick played just one game this season before landing on injured reserve because of a neck issue.

The third pick in the third round of the 2004 NFL Draft, Hardwick entered the lineup as a rookie and remained so throughout his 11 seasons with San Diego. Hardwick played collegiately at Purdue

Injuries forced the Chargers to turn to five different centers in 2014, with rookieChris Watt listed as the starter at season’s end.

Bummer. Great guy, great presence on the O-line. Gonna miss this one.

Missed him last year. Missed his backup. Missed his backup's backup. Missed his backup's backup's backup. Missed his backup's backup's backup backing up the injured guard instead of being Hardwick's backup's backup's backup's backup.

It was a pretty poorly kept secret that Hardwick was done after this past season. I'm sorry that it ended the way it did but the more you saw him, the more he was losing weight, the less likely it was that he'd return.

He was a fantastic center and a better person, sorry to see him go. Hopefully he can still teach Watt or whomever a few things.
