San Diego Chargers: $4.5 million — San Diego entered the weekend with less than $150,000 in 2013 cap space, but will gain $4.5 million in cap space on Sunday. The Chargers released offensive tackle Jared Gaither after the first season in a four-year, $24.5 million contract extension that included $9 million in guaranteed money, all of which was paid out in 2012. Gaither was due $4.5 million in base salary in 2013, which remained on their cap following his release. Injuries limited Gaither to just 243 offensive snaps, which means he earned $37,037.04 for each snap last season. Of the 11 players to be released with a "post-June 1" designation, Gaither, who has battled injuries throughout his career, is the only one who remains without a contract.

Part of the cap savings on Gaither will be used on first-round offensive tackle D.J. Fluker, who will have a first-year cap number of $2,073,182 once he signs his rookie contract.

Sorry, had the Turdle down yesty and he decided to spend the entire day here.

Birds are to messy, plus the fact they need to be caged doesn't sit well with me these days.

I'm lucky in the fact that where I live, there are huge flocks of Galah's, Cockatoo's and Parrots here, so I can leave seed in the backyard and they will often call by for a free feed and then be free to go live their normal routine, I like that idea far more than keeping one "penned up" like a criminal.

I like to hear this kinda stuff.......

At Chargers practices, you can't tell the starters from the No. 2s from the scrubinis by the number of snaps. The slice of practice pie is the same for all three units.

Closer to the season, of course, the starters will hog the snaps. Yet, the equal allotment now is "very different," said Chargers newcomer Max Starks. "A lot of places don't do it like that," he said.

Starks is entering his 10th NFL season after playing for Steelers coaches Bill Cowher and Mike Tomlin. At the University of Florida, he played for Steve Spurrier and Ron Zook.

So, if he says a football practice is "very different," there's heft to the words.

    What does it mean?

I think it means that when Mike McCoy spouts cliches about "preparing everybody" and "finding the best 53 players," he's doing more than spouting cliches. The rookie head coach, who got the job after San Diego's first losing season since 2003, is demonstrating that all players will have a real chance to learn and will get a fair shake in the job hunt.

For those of you familiar with high school literature class, here's another way to describe it: Chargers practice fields aren't home to Animal Farm. None of the animals are more equal than the others -- at least in June, in terms of snaps, while players aren't wearing pads.

OK, so that wasn't a perfect analogy; in any event, Starks finds the approach refreshing. You're only as strong as your weakest player, right? And given the number of injuries during a football season, those scrubinis will be called upon to decide games.

"They want the competition," Starks said of McCoy and staff, "but also to prepare everybody. Give everybody an equal chance and opportunity going into camp.

Everybody has four snaps. So if you’re looking at the left tackle positions, it’s four, four, four – who did the best, and you can grade and go on. Everybody’s got opportunities."

Never mind that he started in three Super Bowls. Starks, 31, welcomes the chance to show McCoy that he deserves a starting job.

"I’m definitely competing for the job," he said after practicing behind King Dunlap at left tackle. "It’s a process. I don’t want anything given to me. I like the fact that it’s an open competition. You want the best five out there that have the best chemistry on the field.

And I wouldn’t feel right if it was me and it was just handed to me, and I don’t get along with the left guard, or the right guard or center, and we don’t communicate cleanly. Or conversely, if other individuals don’t communicate and they just were given the job.

"It’s great to have competition because it makes your room better and your offensive line stronger."
