Predicting the Chargers' 53: Take 1

Each week leading up to the final cuts on Aug. 30, U-T Chargers beat writer Michael Gehlken and columnist Kevin Acee will update their predictions for who makes the 53-man roster. In a training camp that is already proving highly competitive, there will almost certainly be many changes along the way. Nonetheless, here is the first crack by Gehlken and Acee.

    QB (3)

    Philip Rivers

    Kellen Clemens

Brad Sorensen. Not easy to keep three QBs, but indications are that Chargers will do so.

    RB (4)

    Ryan Mathews

    Danny Woodhead

    Donald Brown

    Marion Grice

    OL (8)

    King Dunlap

    Chad Rinehart

    Nick Hardwick

    Jeromey Clary

    D.J. Fluker

    Chris Watt

Johnnie Troutman. Getting work at right guard in place of Clary. Final spot could come down to him or Rich Ohrnberger.

    Michael Harris

    WR (6)

    Keenan Allen

    Malcom Floyd

    Eddie Royal

    Vincent Brown

    Tevin Reese

Dontrelle Inman. CFL veteran has started camp strong. Seyi Ajirotutu still very much in mix due to work on special teams.

    TE (4)

    Antonio Gates

    Ladarius Green

    David Johnson

    John Phillips

    DL (6)

    Corey Liuget

    Kendall Reyes

    Sean Lissemore

    Kwame Geathers

    Damik Scafe

Ryan Carrethers. Could be healthy inactive to start season, as Geathers more advanced.

    OLB (5)

    Melvin Ingram

    Jarret Johnson

    Dwight Freeney

    Jerry Attaochu

    Tourek Williams

    ILB (5)

    Donald Butler

    Manti Te’o

    Kavell Connor

    Reggie Walker

Andrew Gachkar. Special teams ability could prompt team to keep five ILBs, but this is not a lock.

    CB (5)

    Shareece Wright

Brandon Flowers. As good as advertised, which has raised level of competition in camp.

    Jason Verrett

    Richard Marshall

    Steve Williams

    Safety (4)

    Eric Weddle

    Marcus Gilchrist

    Jahleel Addae

    Darrell Stuckey

    Kicker (1)

    Nick Novak

    Punter (1)

    Mike Scifres

    Long snapper (1)

    Mike Windt

Now that does excite me .....................you all know how big a fan I am of "Cecil" Floyd !!!

Just the thought of him staying healthy and getting on the end of those long-bombs from Fill-er-up, does indeed get the blood flowing.
There's not to much in the game I enjoy more than watching acrobatic, high leaping catches by WR's and Cecil is capable of performing them with the best of them when fit.

Well that all depends on just how saggy a "Tabocco pouch" one has, doesn't it !!!

The climate also plays a role in that of course............. ;)

As long as his game is continually improving, I'm all for that also.

Would like to know if he is still an option at WR though, as well as playing a role on ST's ................. long gone are the days of "ST'er Only" tags .................gotta be able to have dual roles in todays game.

Just concerns me we haven't seen much of him at all on Offense of late and God knows there have been times when we could have used a decent set of hands on O in the last 2 years.

    OH NOEEEEEEE'sssss.............

Shushhhhhhhhh, best we can hope for, is he can't read (where'd he go to school ? ............Okie St ?..... Auburn ? ........ any one of 300 others !!!)

P.s........................I don't even know what team Millner plays for [IMG]

Wasn't he actually "called out" by his coach and benched last year for poor form ??? (YEP, just looked itt up, it was him)

As I've stated many times over the years............ the new generation is so full of themselves after being told from Day dot "how special they are", poor bastards are totally clueless to the real truth and it shows in their play..............he's simply another of those, whose mouth far outweighs he's game, plenty of those around these day's unfortunately.

Speaking of defense, anybody else in here concerned about defending the run in short yardage? Remember that fatboy I wanted in the top 3 that could plug the middle? Still waiting.

Can't help myself, pretty excited that the team will be even more competitive this year, especially in the passing game on both sides of the ball - but still don't believe we can consistently win in the trenches to support or defend the run. Gotta see it with my own eyes before I will believe there is any improvement there.

    Nice segue. ;)

Yes, the pass defense looks to be improved both in the front and back end, but the run defense remains a question mark. Hopefully, better play from T'eo in the middle will help, and a healthy Lissemore plus either Geathers or Carrethers will be "good enough" to be respectable. It's fortunate that the NFL is now a passing league.

Erummm... Out of the top 4 rushing teams last year, 3 of them are on our schedule for 2014 - Bills, Seahags & 9ers. Even the Chiefs were ranked #10 in rushing, (Faiders were #12), and we will see them twice.

Bottom line? No matter the "passing league" phrase favored by the Mediots, you still have to play the run - or the hags wouldn't be current champs.

I'm just pissing and moaning because I didn't get my run-stuffing fatboy in the draft - I'll get over it......

    ....or not. ;)

Now c'mon Dave, you seriously going to claim that one ?

We all knew he was going to have to take a pay cut or look elsewhere for work, that was a no brainer.

Hats off to the bloke for being smart enough to do the obvious all the same, swallowing ones pride and admitting that one is being overpaid isn't easy to admit for many.

Now, let's see if he can get back on the park and contribute, that's his next challenge.
