If kickoffs were judged on pure distance, Sunday would have been one of the worst days of Nate Kaeding’s career.
Because kickoffs are instead judged by how far they are returned and where teams start afterward, it turned out to be one of his best.
Fact is, deep kickoffs don’t necessarily translate to good performance by the coverage team.
In Sunday’s victory over the Arizona Cardinals, Kaeding averaged 57.6 yards on his kickoffs, sixth-lowest of his career. Yet the Cardinals’ 17-yard return average was eighth-lowest against the Chargers for a Kaeding-kicked game. And the Cardinals’ average starting point after kickoffs was the 26, 11 yards behind the Chargers' three previous opponents.
“I have to buy into it and I can do a better job at it – I can put the ball where my team needs me to put it,” Kaeding said. “It’s my job to fit into the scheme.”
Kaeding has just one touchback in 22 kickoffs this season, tied with the New York Jets’ Nick Folk for the lowest touchback percentage (4.5) in the NFL. Kaeding’s 61.5-yard average is also lowest in the league among those with more than 14 kickoffs.
Since 2004, Kaeding’s rookie season, the Chargers’ kick coverage team has ranked 14th in kickoff return average allowed. This while Kaeding has had just 41 touchbacks in his 551 kickoffs, fifth-worst in the NFL (among those with 400 kickoffs) in at least the past 20 seasons.

“I’m not a home run hitter,” Kaeding said yesterday, as he has many times.
He’s good enough. And he has to be for the foreseeable future, as the Chargers don’t believe they cn afford a roster spot for a kickoff specialist and are not going to jettison the most accurate regular-season field goal kicker in history.
“It is something you always talk about, but the last couple years with us we have been scrambling every week it seems like to get that next guy who is going to come in and play,” head coach Norv Turner said. “It has been unusual. We’ve had more guys play on special teams already than we did probably all last year.”

I remember a ball that barely made it inside the 20 last weekend.

    Our special teams are awesome!

If this is what it takes to stop kickoff returns, then I'm all for it.
Let's see how t all comes together against the Raiders....
