I would say that the pool of players will be VJ, Merriman, Gates & Mcneill.

Personally I would like to see them get Merriman locked up so we have our leader on offense signed and our leader on defense. Then let the chips lay where they will. We saw how lifeless this team was without him and that will be a hard personality to replace. I can see them putting Gates low on priority with the emergence of some of our WR's. VJ will also be important but should come cheaper than the others. When it comes to the franchise tag, will it be better to franchise a player that will cost us less? If so, who would that be?

    IMO........

The Chargers are going to see how well Merriman comes back from his Knee injury. And that there will be no more signings right now, the Season will start and the season will end and there will be nothing going on during the season. Merrimans Camp has all ready been notified of this so that he does not feel as if he is being ignored. They will talk money once the season is over. Now then because of the CBA, he can only get a 30% raise next year. It’s all those future years that will be in negotiations.

I say "sign him with stipulations."
If he gets in trouble again, he loses something.
If he doesn't meet certain expectations, he loses.
    etc.

Already crying about someone spending all the monies. Typical.

McNeill IMO is next priority, then Merriman.

McNeil MIGHT get done before or during the season.

Merriman will be franchised if he has a good year.

VJ is a crap shoot IMO.

Is Gates a FA after this year?

    If so, he's top priority.

To answer the question posed....... for me it has got to be Big Mc. I reckon he's going to have a big year and your left tackle is second only to QB in importance to the team. Yes we can wait a year but if he has the Pro Bowl season I think he can have then he will be looking for the Kings ransom then.

No team's window for winning is closing any quicker than San Diego's.

The Chargers signed quarterback Philip Rivers to a six-year, $92 million contract extension, but there still is a ton of work to do to keep the team intact.

    Philip Rivers -- UFA
    Ian Scott -- UFA
    L.J. Shelton -- UFA
    Darren Sproles -- RFA
    Mike Tolbert -- ERFA
    Charlie Whitehurst -- RFA
    Kris Wilson -- UFA

McNeill after the season, or before the season ends. Merriman will get the franchise tag after the season, and worry about him after the 2010 season.

Gates will be the #1 priority after the season going into his final year, but keep in mind they could franchise him for the 2011 season.

They will make Cro play out this contract, and expect him to have a big 2010 season in his final year of his contract. If Gates is already signed they could easily franchise Cro for 2011.

Why not, they franchised Sproles. I could see those things play out that way.

Some of you may have seen this, there is a 'coach' (Pacstud) over on chargers.com that grades the O line in real detail. After the Cards game here is a synopsis of what he thinks. Some interesting opinions. Tx to Pacstud for his write ups.

McNeill is the bomb. He may not be perfect, but he is so good.

Dielman didn't have his best night, but you can literally see him slug the ground when he misses. Probably my favorite overall lineman and obviously a stud.

Hardwick is Hardwick. He is an undersized center that sometimes gets out muscled. But he is the QB of the line, makes a lot of great plays, out works and wears down his opponent, and sets the tone of being NASTY and MEAN. This can't be overstated.

Vasquez needs a lot of work, but his ceiling appears high. He is very strong and has natural leverage, but on this night, rarely got to the right position to use his strength and leverage. He is a grasshopper, but will soon grow and mature.

Clary, well, you guys know my position. I think he's the whipping boy for casual fans who don't know anything about O-line. He is by no means a pro-bowler (whatever that's worth) but is a VERY good RT imo. More importantly, he is the BEST for US this year. I analyze him fairly imo, and he does a good job.
