    Time 5:15
    Last meeting
The Patriots took advantage of an ailing Chargers team and advanced to Super Bowl XLII with a 21-12 victory in last season's AFC Championship Game.

    Streaks
Thirteen of the last 15 matchups have gone New England's way and the Patriots have ousted the Chargers from the playoffs in each of the past two seasons. They own a 20-14-2 overall series edge. Check out the historical matchup of the last five games.

    Last week
Matt Cassel discovered the deep ball, hooking up with Randy Moss on a 66-yard touchdown pass to lead the Patriots past the 49ers, 30-21. ... The Chargers could not get their offense going in Miami and they suffered a 17-10 defeat at the hands of the Dolphins.

    Keep your eye on ...
The ultimate X-factor: While he has has been overshadowed by stars such as Tom Brady, Moss and Corey Dillon over the years, Kevin Faulk has been the one constant for the Patriots throughout their successful run this decade. With Brady out this season, Faulk has stepped it up again and had a career-high two touchdown runs last week.

San Diego opening the Gates: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates is coming off one of the worst games of his career. He had only one catch for 12 yards in the loss to Miami, but in two career matchups against the Patriots he has 185 receiving yards.

The pick of destiny: In his last two games, Cassel has thrown three interceptions, while San Diego's Philip Rivers has been intercepted four times in his last four games. The Patriots and Chargers are tied for ninth with five defensive interceptions apiece.

    Did you know?
Since 2003, the Patriots are 20-3 in October. ... After playing in San Francisco, New England decided to stay on the West Coast in the week leading up to their game in San Diego. ... When Chargers CB Antonio Cromartie picks off a pass, the Chargers are 7-0. ... Five of Chris Chambers' 11 catches this season have been for touchdowns.

New England Patriots (3-1) at San Diego Chargers (2-3), 8:30 p.m. EST

The bicoastal rivalry, offering a rematch of last year's AFC championship game, surely has lost some of its zip. No Tom Brady, no Shawne Merriman, no Chris Chambers. Tomlinson has been ineffective. We don't have the Junior Seau story line anymore, either.

When the schedule makers selected the prime-time matchups, nobody could have guessed both teams would have losses to the Dolphins.

Revenge, venomous talk and Super Bowl overtones aren't nearly as heavy for the latest installment. The Patriots need to maintain some sans-Brady momentum from last week's triumph in San Francisco, while the Chargers are desperate to not fall too far behind the Denver Broncos.

The Patriots have won 11 of the past 13 meetings, but this one will be a difficult task. They stayed out West after beating the 49ers, and while all feedback from the Patriots has been glowing about the decision, it didn't work out too well for the Cardinals, who pulled a similar maneuver but lost to the Washington Redskins and Jets.

What I recall is that Nick Pernicano, a big - time early Charger booster, high roller, etc donated that cannon, early on when the Chargers moved from Balboa Stadium to the newly - built
San Diego Stadium. I can't recall that cannon being at balboa Stadium.

Pernicano was very well knon, and always sported a huge handlebar mustache.

Kinda sketchy, I know, but about the time alla this transpired, I was running away from home to join the Army.

    from wikipedia
    George Pernicano
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    Jump to: navigation, search
George Pernicano (born 1917) is best known for his restaurant Casa di Baffi, and for his connection to the San Diego Chargers.

Pernicano owns 3% of the San Diego Chargers, which he bought from Chargers founder Barron Hilton in 1961, during the height of his upscale restaurant's popularity. On Sept 8, 1996, he was inducted into the Chargers' Hall of Fame. Until recently, Pernicano had never missed a Chargers home game.

Casa di Baffi, which was open from 1946 to 1985 in the Hillcrest neighborhood of San Diego, was one of the finest restaurants in the city in its day. However, to current residents, it is considered a blighted eyesore since Pernicano refuses to sell or redevelop the lot due to sentimental reasons
    :abq2:

Pernicano is the one who gives out cigars to the team after a win.
Pernicano may have donated the cannon, but it has been operated by san diego fireworks for many years now. I got to check it out when I was on tghe field running followspot for some preseason game way back when I worked for san diego stage and lighting

I'm warming up the old vocal cords so I can help cause a few false start penalties for the Patsies because they won't be able to hear a freaking thing once the crowd gets rocking tonight!

    Go Chargers!!!

Keep America beautiful...punch the Pats square in the mouth!!

Thanks guys. I didn't know the history of the cannon.

We met George Pernicano at a KC game a few years ago, he needed to borrow my phone to call his wife. (his hotel room phone wasn't working)

Here he is with my son,

Anyway, before the game the cannon is in the parking lot at M1
