Philip Rivers smiles, happy that his coming-out season is coming here, in the midst of brilliance.

Two Sundays ago on the grass of Monster Park, in the second quarter of a game that was still close, Keenan McCardell made a young cornerback look foolish and helped make a young quarterback look magnificent.

On second-and-7 from the 27-yard line, McCardell took off straight at 49ers cornerback Shawntae Spencer. Never leaning one way or the other, never giving a hint of what he was about to do, McCardell stopped briefly at the 35. He took off again, stopping for a split second at the 42. He altered his route slightly and ran to the 48. He stopped and returned quickly to the 38.

Spencer, frozen for a time, did not get closer than 5 yards away in the end. It might as well have been a mile. A scrambling Rivers delivered a strike to McCardell, on his tiptoes a half-foot from being out of bounds, for a 12-yard gain.

Two plays later, Eric Parker eluded Spencer and caught a ball at the 43 before running another 10 yards for a 27-yard gain. On the next play, Vincent Jackson made an over-the-shoulder catch in the end zone after sprinting past the safety trying to cover him.
