Chargers wide receiver and special teams ace Kassim Osgood donned a cap and gown after finishing the majority of his coursework at San Diego State University in 2003, but his sense of educational accomplishment wasn’t completely fulfilled until recently.

Although he walked in SDSU’s graduation six years ago, Osgood needed to complete one more course in order to finish his degree, and the two-time Pro Bowler recently wrapped up his final class and received a Bachelor of Science in sociology.

“It’s big because I’m the first one in my family to graduate from college,” Osgood said. “It’s a big accomplishment for the family. Now I get something to hang on the wall in my office.”

Throughout his NFL career, Osgood’s degree weighed heavily on his mind, but the demanding schedule brought on by his day job as a professional athlete made it tough to finish his education.

“I’ve only needed one more class, but I could never finish because of football,” Osgood said. “The times that the class was offered never worked for me. Finally this past fall I was able to get together with the teacher and found a good time on Monday night. It was only one night a week, so I got in there and got it finished.”

Osgood’s charitable foundation “Team K.O.” partners with Athletes for Education to reward young people who excel in the classroom, and he hopes his recent achievement will strengthen his message to the young people.

“It’s kind of hard to preach to the kids about getting a college degree if you don’t have one yourself,” Osgood said. “I’m glad I don’t have to worry about that anymore.”

Way to go, Kassim. Takes some character to get that done when you're in the middle of an NFL career. Impressive.
