If the over/under is 1400, do you take the over or the under? Keep in mind that the Chargers ran for 1423 as a team last year

I'd take the under mainly because he's a rookie and we're still a passing team.

I wouldn't be surprised with a 1,100-1,200 yard season if he's as good as he's supposed to be, but not quite 1,400.

I'll say this much, if we landed someone who'll rush for 1,400+ his rookie year the Chargers offense will be unstoppable.

I will be happy with 1000 yards, but won't be surprised if he gets 11-1200. But I think 1400 is totally out of the question.

I ask because my friend and I have a bet. He took the over, I took the under. The loser has to wear a Tebow Jersey

I was thinking 1,400 before opening the thread to see what the line was.

Does that mean you take the over?

Nope. I think it will be close to 1,400. It is quite possible that it will be higher if the offense scores early and the Chargers pound out the rest of the game. Another factor is that running back is one position that a rookie can have stellar year. Another thing to consider is Sproles. It would be pretty easy to argue either the over or the under. I know this much, if I put money on it the result will be the opposite.

Guys, they are not going to open up the running game with a 1st year rookie. Norv called him "smooth for a big man with great speed". That sounds perfect for the ol "Run up the gut".

If RM gets 1400 it will be because we have witnessed something special. The passing game isnt going to make room for him. He'll have to earn his yards inside the tackles.

I say somewhere around 900 yards with 300 yards receiving.

He will average 350 yards a game, score 2 TDs a game and shoot lightning bolts from his arse...

I'm gonna go with only sightly under. Keep in mind Norv wants him to get atleast 250 rushes and if he averages around 5 ypc, that's 1250 yards.. but he also rushed for over 100 yards in every game last season so if that spark carries over then he has a good chance of passing 1400 yards. Either way I don't care if he gets less yards than LT just as long as we win the Superbowl with him as the MVP

I'll say he has more than LT rookie yards. Imma go with 1300. I think with sproles matthews and our passing game we annihilate the league and compete with the ravens for number 1 offense in yards. With our weapons though we have # 1 scoring offense and a top 5 scoring offense of all times.

I say sproles has over 700 yards from scrimmage!!

I see no chance of that happening. With this line, he will be lucky to get 4.5 ypc, very lucky. I see it probably closer to 4.2-4.3.

technically speaking, what would happen if he had exactly 1400 yards? then who has to wear the tebow jersey?

Since only 5 players in the top 20 last year had 5+ ypc, In 08, only 2 of the top 20, and in 07 only 4 of the top 20 did it. I think it is highly unlikely that Mathews does it. Then throw in the fact that only 8 players in the last 3 years have topped 1400 yards. I would say the odds are heavily stacked in my favor.

On top of that, Emmit Smith only had 5ypc once under Norv. Terry Allen never had 1400 yards, and only had over 4ypc once under Norv, Ricky Williams had over 4ypc once in the 2 years under Norv in Miami (They had Fiedler at QB, so they had no choice but to run), LT only had 3.6 ypc under Norv his rookie year, The Raiders didn't get over 4ypc either of the 2 years Norv coached there (and barely even had a 1000 yard back, Jordan had 1025 yards in 05), Gore had an amazing year in 06, but they also had a horrible QB just like when he was in Miami.

So basically throughout Norv's Career, he has only had 6 seasons where his RB got over 4ypc, and that is out of the last 19 years.

Once again, I will say the odds are in favor of Mathews not getting 1400 yards OR 5ypc

    I'm taking the under.

I think Mathews gets 260 carries, 1066 yards (4.1 ypc), and 10 TD as a rookie.

Add in about 40 receptions, 360 yards, and 2 TD.

That would be an amazing year, and would be only the 7th time that a starting RB has gotten 4+ ypc with Norv as the HC or DC.

    Solid post.

I am sure Norv has already assured RM that the game is never in his hands. 17 leads the charge and all you have to do is play your role.

He may be OUR feature back, but he will not be a feature back by NFL standards.

I wouldn't even consider over 1400 yards. This offense is still Philip Rivers' offense and though we will be balanced, the type of wide open aggressive passing limits the Chargers' individual rush efforts. The team will eclipse 1400 yards rushing again, easily, but Mathews will break just over 1100.

The over/under should be total yards. I would place it at about 1600. I'll take the under, but only by a tad.

i think mathews will do kinda like LT did, ima say 260 carries, 1470 yards. ypc would be 5.6, and i think he will catch 45 passes for 400 yards. yards per catch would be 8.8. and on top of that ima say he finds the endzone with 15 rushing touchdowns, and 8 receiving tds, i know it seem out there buts its doable

so with that being said ima go ahead and say ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
