Loss of Edwards hurts Chiefs on defense
    By RANDY COVITZ
    The Kansas City Star

Chiefs linebacker Donnie Edwards fought off the block of San Diego center Nick Hardwick, stopped tight end Antonio Gates for a 1-yard loss and disappeared into the locker room.

Edwards gave little indication his left hamstring had tightened up on him on the next-to-last play of the first half Sunday.

“I’m not the type of guy who lays on the field,” Edwards said.

When the Chiefs returned for the second half, Edwards stayed in the locker room, applied heat on the injury and tried wrapping it. But he couldn’t go.

“You know me, I’m not the type of guy who misses plays,” Edwards said, “but if I can’t go, I can’t go. If you can’t run, you can’t play.”

And San Diego exploited the absence of Edwards, the Chiefs’ leading tackler. The Chargers’ LaDainian Tomlinson, who was held in check in the first half, exploded for a 31-yard touchdown run on the Chargers’ first drive of the third quarter and a 28-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, giving San Diego its 24-10 victory.

“You definitely notice he’s not there; his presence is always felt out there because he makes plays for their defense,” Tomlinson said of Edwards, a Chargers teammate during 2002-06. “The first play he wasn’t there, we knew. You can look across the ball and see he was missing.

“We did what we had to do with him not being there.”

This was a tight contest throughout the first half. After Donnie went down, you could see the running lanes open up for us.

It is a rare thing to see Donnie Edwards go down with an injury, but as a Charger fan I sure was glad to see it.

Edwards got a bum wrap here. Not my favorite player, but not exactly chopped liver either.

Interesting point. I'd be curious to see what LT's yardage was before and after the injury.

Hey it's part of the game, all those injurys on the chiefs side told me our players were playing hard and dirty. If part of winning is knocking a few sad sacks out of the game through sheer force, than that to me is as legitament as good blocking, play calling, or any other "acceptable" way of winning.

I figured he left the game because he was under appreciated.

He was last seen wandering the main concourse looking for young military people to whine to about being underpaid.

You're right, our physical play on both sides of the ball play a huge role. We need more of the same next week at Tennessee.

Gates creamed him, even in a loss play...that's what I take away from this. I will trade -1 yard for knocking out a lb every time.
