Because I know the "yeah, because they're playing each other" response is inevitible I'll post this.

Hell, even the cellar dweller of the NL West (the only one of the 5 to not be in playoff contention in September) has a .500 or better record against non NL-West opponents!

Just to put this into further perspective....Every team in the NL West has a .500 record or better against the other two divisions in the same league.

This is something no other division in baseball can say.

The NL West is not weak.

    2005 was two years ago.

I just dont think we can compete with these teams with our lineup now.

    Why not?

We competed with them throughout the season?

    5-3 against the Cubs
    3-0 against Milwaukee
    4-2 against the Mets
    3-4 against Philly
    8-10 against Colorado
    8-10 against Arizona

The Phillies are the only one of the non-NL West teams the Padres have a losing record against this year...but it's only by 1 game.

They won't play the Rockies in the playoffs (because that'd require the Rockies and Padres to finish 1st and 2nd in the NL West, which isn't going to happen)

I'm most concerned about the Diamond Backs in the playoffs....but, even then, they've shown they can "compete" with them.

I'd be equally as concerned about the Rockies, but with the way the standings are right now, I'm fairly certain that if the Rockies are in the playoffs that means the Padres are not....making any concern over our chances against them in the playoffs a moot point.

The Padres wouldn't be in the wild card lead and still having a shot at the division right now if not for the acquisitions of Milton Bradley and Scott Hairston.

They just beat one of the playoff contendors with a rookie on the mound.
