    By Casey Pearce, Chargers.com
Earlier this week, Chargers Head Coach Norv Turner spoke of his pleasure in the way several young receivers had stepped up during the first week of training camp. Those young pass catchers could be relied on in a more significant way following an announcement made at Chargers Park Friday.

Veteran Eric Parker, who led all Chargers wide receivers in receptions and yards last year, will be out of action for up to 10 weeks after undergoing an operation on his toe Friday morning.

“He went up to Seattle and saw a specialist,” Turner said. “They felt the best thing for him was to do the surgery. We just hope the procedure went well so we can get him back as soon as possible.”

The operation involved the repair of a cracked sesamoid bone near his right big toe. Parker missed a portion of the team’s Mini Camp earlier this summer and hadn’t practiced at all during training camp. While both his physical ability and his presence will be missed, Turner promises to press on with the younger receivers on his roster.

“My mind set is you coach the guys that are here and you get them going,” Turner said. “I want to get Eric back as quick as we can because he provides a lot of things for this football team. We have to get the young guys to step up and do the things Eric has been doing.”

Friday afternoon’s practice saw several young receivers taking more reps than usual do to the fact that Parker, Vincent Jackson (lower leg), Craig Davis (knee) and Kassim Osgood (hamstring) were all sidelined. Turner remained upbeat regarding the status of his receivers.

“I like where our guys are going,” Turner said. “My experience in training camp is some guys miss a few days because we run them pretty hard and we’re asking a lot of them. But we’ll try and get them back on the field so that they can do the things they need to do to get read for the rest of the season.”

Turner also noted that the competition among his younger wide receivers will likely heat up in the coming days.

“It’s going to be a bunch of guys thinking that it’s their spot,” Turner said. “It will make the next four weeks real interesting for all of our guys.”

Yup, seems that fate may be working some strange mojo.

10 weeks out, any chance of listing him on IR?

    :)

Adopt, adapt, improve. I have ZERO worries folks. This team is so loaded it is scary. I've been watching the Bolts since '80-ish, and these guys are ready to gut defenses!

Y'all worry to much, the Bolts are going to go out and play games. If EP is the reason we lose, then this team isn't that damn good in the first place. I'm just glad our players don't sit around and talk the **** y'all do. Fawk, we might as well just pack it in and all stay home. What *** wipes.:bolt:

I couldn't agree more, parker will have a solid contribution when he gets back into action, he is an asset but this won't amount to more than adapting, like kev said. I am sure over the course of the season there will be other things to deal with, we will deal; no prob we are stacked and deep; and will keep focus.

I think Parker can work his way back into the rotation when his time comes, and redeem himself he has been a go to guy for a while now... but in the meanwhile the guys we got should be able to do their part... Not the best news, but eh' **** happens.

Pretty sure we can just expect Malcom Floyd to step in and step up.

It does, however, make the punt returner position even more interesting - lots to prove in the upcoming "games that don't count".

In a non-related roster move, the Chargers claimed wide receiver Rhema McKnight off waivers today. He was waived by the New Orleans Saints on Thursday. The 6-2, 212-pound McKnight is a rookie out of Notre Dame, who caught 67 passes for 907 and 15 touchdowns as a senior for the Irish in 2006. A native of LaPalma, Calif., near Los Angeles, McKnight finished his Notre Dame career as the second-leading receiver in school history with 170 catches, good for 2,277 yards and 22 touchdowns. McKnight will wear No. 9 for the Chargers.

We will see what happens. I would expect to have EP back by the bye week October 21.

I think they'll PUP Parker. That gives them 10 weeks - 4 weeks preseason + 6 weeks regular. Then they either activate him, letting go of a player, or put him on IR.

Likely they'll make the determination on whether to take him off during the bye week.

Damn. :censored: Contrary to some of you, I'm far more comfortable with Parker in the lineup. He's the best route-runner on this team, hands-down. It's not even close.

I'm less comfortable with Davis in the role, so that leaves another injury-prone WR in Floyd...which means 8-9 in the box on defense to stop LT and dare us to throw. Floyd or Jackson go down, and we've got a serious problem.

Norv's got his first challenge already, and it's one we've faced before....the Donks know it all too well. If you don't have the receivers to pull off quick slants or quick outs, you can stack the box & blitz all day long. We already saw it with Brees.

This is the worst news we could have gotten. And it changes my predictions on the outcome of this season.
