Bobby Beathard was late and presumed lost. He had scheduled an afternoon appointment at Delaware Valley College in the spring of 1969, but as darkness descended on Doylestown, Pa., there was no sign of the Atlanta Falcons' scout.

Ted Cottrell decided to stop waiting and start eating before the dining hall closed down.

“By the time (Beathard) got up to Doylestown, it was 7 o'clock at night, and he was supposed to be there at 4,” the Chargers' new defensive coordinator recalled yesterday afternoon. “He asked, 'Can you work out?' I said, 'What?' But I worked out anyway.”

With automobile headlights providing the only illumination, and desire compensating for digestion, Cottrell auditioned for Beathard on a full stomach.

Realistically, he had little choice in the matter. Delaware Valley had produced only one previous NFL player – Cottrell's older brother, Bill, a center with the Detroit Lions – and the league's scouting was not then so sophisticated that a talented player in an obscure place could depend on being discovered.
