Activist bought Go Away Chargers Web site

OCEANSIDE ---- There's at least one well-known face behind the first organized opposition to a possible move by the San Diego Chargers to Oceanside, a search of the Internet showed Thursday.

Activist and City Hall watchdog Nadine Scott, who said Tuesday that she didn't know anything about the group called Go Away Chargers, is registered as the owner of goawaychargers.com, one of two Web sites held by the group.

Scott maintained Thursday that she knew nothing about the group when she bought the Web site recently for a friend, Mandy Berre.

"Everybody knows I buy up domain names. It's one of my hobbies," said Scott. "I didn't even remember it, to tell you the truth."

The Web site was registered July 17 and expires July 18, 2008. Berre did not return requests for comment Thursday.

Scott said she joined Go Away Chargers on Wednesday, the same day an article about the group appeared in the North County Times. She said she hopes to become active in the group.

The group's spokesman, attorney David O'Connell, said before an appearance on a TV program Thursday night that he has met eight to 10 members of the group, but would not give names.

"They say there are others. I assume they're telling me the truth," he said.

He said that until the members feel comfortable, they will stay behind the scenes.

"It ends meaningful discussion when someone condemns you as being stupid," he said Thursday, referring to some people's reactions to Wednesday's story in the North County Times.

During his TV appearance, O'Connell described Go Away Chargers as a group of "conservative people who don't see how this (a Chargers stadium) works for the people."

He noted that the 75-acre property being considered by the Chargers is near pools, a senior center and other facilities. "To take those things away would reduce the quality of life," he said.

"The reality is, for a city the size of Oceanside, (a stadium) is no benefit to them," he said. "It would be a benefit to the Chargers."

The Chargers announced last year that the National Football League team is considering the property just east of Interstate 5 between Oceanside Boulevard and Mission Avenue for a new stadium.

The property, now home to the Center City Municipal Golf Course and known as Goat Hill because of its steep terrain, is tightly ringed by businesses, apartments, homes and parkland.

The city has leased the property, which is designated as parkland, through 2011 to operators of the 18-hole golf course.

To proceed with the stadium, a majority of Oceanside voters would have to approve changing the site's parkland designation. The team's goal is to choose a location for the new stadium by the end of this year and go to the ballot in November 2008.

The choice hinges, in big part, on a market survey due this month assessing whether a stadium and as much as 2 million square feet of high-end office space would make the project financially viable. The team is also considering two sites in Chula Vista.

O'Connell said Thursday during his TV appearance that it would help if the value of the parkland could be returned to residents.

"My preference would be to see that dedicated park space be used by the whole city of Oceanside," he said. "The property has a view of the ocean. It's almost irreplaceable."

He said he is a fan, and would like to see the team stay in Mission Valley.

With regard to the second Go Away Chargers Web site, at netrootz.com, Dawn Brosius, a Temecula real estate agent and investor, is named by an Internet research service as the registrant.

Brosius states on her personal Web site that she is vice president of Netrootz, a local company that provides Web services to grass-roots groups such as blogging, calendaring and Web site hosting, free of charge.

Activist Jeeni Criscenzo, who is listed on the Web as the Netrootz contact, is also a partner in the company. Criscenzo, who challenged Darrell Issa for the 49th Congressional District seat in 2006, said Thursday she has nothing to do with Go Away Chargers.

"I'm not in favor of the Chargers coming here," she said, "but I have no time to deal with that right now."

Brosius said that she is not linked to Go Away Chargers either, and she and Criscenzo are Web site facilitators only.
