Solid hire IMHO. Wouldn't it be great if he got even more out of AG and the rest of the TEs? I think there's more to be had.

Very underwhelming hire imho. I understand why they plumped for Metz but I'd like to have seen some young gun with bright ideas.

Why do you automatically assume youth = better ideas?

    McDaniels?

One is in jail and the other is injury prone.

I don't. I want younger blood with better/fresher ideas to come in. Metz has been around and was actually out of work when we got him and probably thinks alot like Reich. Would be good to have different viewpoint/opinions in the mix.

Hey what better way to use him when he can't do it anymore?
Teach the young guys how to box out a defender gates style!

Again, why do you assume "younger blood" = better/fresher ideas?

You say you don't but you insist on adding that qualifier to your desire of who they should hire.

I get wanting better/fresher ideas, I just don't get why it necessarily has to come from somebody young or why you assume Pete won't have any because he's not young.

Great player doesn't always equal great coach.

Not that I'd entirely hate the idea.

Of course not. Just as mediocre player does not always equal great coach... Or bad player... Or....

Shannon Sharpe was a pretty good TE. Maybe you all would be happier with him. :)

As a coach? Nobody would be able to understand him. Sounds too much like Mush Mouth from Fat Albert.

Right. But we really don't know what to expect from Pete as a coach at this juncture.

I guess I'm seeing Metz as old blood without new/fresh ideas. As I said he's been around Reich so one would have to think they think alike. Sometimes that's a good thing but for me it'd be good to get some differing viewpoints/ideas in, and ok, if that comes from an 'older' gent I'm cool with that too. But having said that the game has evolved massively. I'd argue for example that O coaches like Norv have not kept up with the change in how the game is being played. So the older gent would need to have been around some different types of players/coaches eg. running QBs (not that we have one of those), hybrid WRs/TEs, Chip Kelly types etc.

Why not be leaders instead of followers?

Having said all that we do of course have Mike Mc who has not been thru the Buffalo school so he might bring that balance.

Fair enough, but how do you know Reich doesn't like having Metz around primarily because he offers a different viewpoint to bounce off with?

Also, he's just the TE coach anyway. It's not like he's the one designing plays or coming up with new ideas.

I think Pete will do a good job for the Bolts. The way I understand MM's offense, is that it's evolving and still in it's infancy. I don't think it ever hurts a young player to be around so much game experience to grow from.

His predecessor as TE coach is now the OC in Tennessee, and it's Frank's first gig as OC. How cool would it have been to have another fresh mind (someone coming from a diff scheme, not necessarily young) come in and mix it up with Reich and McCoy. As I said at the outset it's an underwhelming hire.

I don't know if Reich wants him around because he offers a diff viewpoint... but as he has come from Buffalo like Frank I would expect he thinks/sees things like Frank does.

I can see what you are saying, but why do you think that Reich and Metz are both coaching the same scheme? Because they played on the same team 20 years ago? He might be an underwhelming coach, he might be a superstar. Let me ask you this; How many TE coaches in the league can you name without the use of the internet? They are all underwhelming in my book...

I called it an underwhelming hire i.e. I'd have preferred to see somebody plucked from a team/system that has been flying and recently. Like you said perhaps he will surprise us and be great, but I doubt it.

I can handle that. Either way, I am not sure that a TE coach is going to have a very visible impact on the flow of the O...

That's probably true but in our case we've a first time OC and our last TE coach is now an OC. There was an opportunity there to get someone who, in my opinion, might bring more to the party than PM.

I get it, but for now we can only speculate if PM has anything to contribute or not. I will go with an innocent until proven guilty stance myself. ;)

Sadly, I think I've said that 1,000 times over the dacades, as I've tried to hang in there and support the Padres...

I'm just saying you're calling it underwhelming based off a lot of assumptions.

You're only assuming Pete thinks the same way Reich does because he's not young and played on the same team as Reich in their playing days. That's a very big assumption.

Pete also played for the Seahawks, Lions, and Panthers, playing under Chuck Knox and Dom Capers in some of those stints. You don't know if his coaching influence stems only from his days playing with Reich and the Bills.
