At this time last year, we were reading and writing about a talented, second-round draft pick who, after two disappointing seasons, felt he had finally grasped what it took physically and mentally to be a successful NFL wide receiver.

As if right on cue, to begin his third year, Reche Caldwell burst onto the fantasy scene, scoring a touchdown in three of his first four contests. Through five weeks, the Florida product was at the center of the Chargers' renaissance-sharing the team lead in touchdown catches with a fellow named Gates and trailing the Pro Bowl tight end by just 41 receiving yards. In what amounted to three snaps more than five games, Caldwell had already matched his career totals in receiving yards and touchdowns with 310 and three.

Then, on the third play from scrimmage in week six, disaster struck for Caldwell and the Bolts when he crumpled to the Georgia Dome turf after a nine-yard reception. Tests revaled the worst-a torn anterior cruciate ligament-and the wideout soon thereafter underwent season-ending surgery.</blockquote>
