Paraphrasing A. J. Smith, just get to the tournament, knock some heads and see what happens. Since the merger the Chargers have made three playoff runs:

    1979-1982 Playoff Run
    G.M. Sanders (1977-1989), coach Coryell (1978-1985), QB Fouts (1973-1985)

1979 – 12–4, lost divisional round to Oilers

1980 – 11-5, won divisional round Bills, lost conference championship to Raiders

1981 – 10-6, won divisional round Dolphins, lost conference championship to Bengals

1982 – 6-3, won wildcard round Steelers, lost divisional round to Dolphins

    1992-1995 Playoff Run
    G.M. Beathard (1990-1999), coach Ross (1992-1996), QB Humphries (1992-1997)

1992 – 11-5, won wildcard round Chiefs, lost divisional round to Dolphins

    1993 – 8-8, missed playoffs

1994 – 11-5, won divisional round Dolphins, won conference championship to Steelers, lost Super Bowl to 49ers

1995 – 9-7, lost wildcard round to Colts

    2004-present Playoff Run
G.M. Smith (2003-), coach Schottenheimer (2002-2006) coach Turner (2007-), QB Brees (2002-2005) QB Rivers (2006-)

    2004 – 12-4, lost wildcard to Jets

    2005 – 9-7, missed playoffs

    2006 – 14-2 lost divisional round Patriots

2007 – 11-2, won wildcard Titans, won divisional round Colts, lost conference championship to Patriots

2008 – 8-8, won wildcard Colts, lost divisional round Steelers

    2009 – 13-3, lost divisional round Jets

Of course, every team and every era is unique but the question remains, how long can we reasonably expect this current playoff run to last?

AFC teams are shown below with their playoff runs, quantifying the length of each playoff run was subjective.

    San Diego Chargers
    4 year run, 1979-1982, 4 playoff years
    4 year run, 1992-1995, 3 playoff years, 1 SB
    6 year run, 2004-2009, 5 playoff years

    Tennessee Titans/Oilers
    3 year run, 1967-1969, 2 playoff years
    3 year run, 1978-1980, 3 playoff years
    6 year run, 1988-1993, 6 playoff years
    5 year run, 1999-2003, 4 playoff years, 1 SB
    2 year run, 2007-2008, 2 playoff years

I think that the best example of a team that was able to maintain continuity and hunger was the 1981-1998 49ers, 3 head coaches making 16 playoff appearances in 18 years.

Maintain the talent level, and keep the guys that help the team.

Although it doesn't hurt having great QBs (Montana and Young).

As long as we have Rivers we'll be in playoff contention.

Even Rivers couldn't save this season.

As long as we have Norv Turner, we will never be a Super Bowl Contender and Rivers will go wasted

We were still in playoff contention so my claim was not refuted.

Build a defense that only wants to hurt you and the Bolt's will have a Lombardi.

Why HB - that might require that AJ come off his "we draft character first" stance. Not sure that he can handle the dynamic of employees who don't stay squeaky clean.

He can't even seem to handle VJ.

We won't win a championship with AJ unless he has some sort of epiphany that his way isn't getting it done. No coach can overcome the current mindset. It may well start with the ownership but AJ toes that line.

Buck, if it weren't for the history of this team never having a "bad ***" defense I'd agree with you and you do make a valid point, it starts at the top.

Player's don't have to rob liquor stores during the week to hate your *** on Sunday and kick you in the balls for good measure. It's an attitude, a tradition, you may score on us but it's going to cost you, nothing comes for free.

Of course a few knuckleheads wouldn't bother me, I liked guy's in the mold of Lyle Alzado and Mean Joe Green, fear is motivation even if it comes from within.

I think we had the makings of one when Merriman first came in & we had Godfrey & Foley on the team.

I was being sarcastic with my first line .... AJ doesn't have the nutz to go after the guys that we need. He can stand firm when it comes to talking money, but he can't see past supposed character issues to get the toughness this club needs. I think it's because he doesn't know how nor have the cojones to handle that type of dynamic. Hell, he couldn't even handle Marty. haha

Nope - high-fiber veggies are AJ's meal of choice. What he knows about meat could be fed to PETA without them being offended.

Good research. People need to grasp there is such a thing as a "window of opportunity" and it always closes. I don't think our "playoff contention" window has closed yet, but our realistic SB contention window may have. Having a great QB is only part of the equation, he can't play defense or special teams, nor catch the ball, nor block. Marino never got one, Manning has but one. Takes ALOT more.

And for many of us, it's about the Lombardi, not just being close to making the playoffs year to year.

What NE has done in the era of free agency is truly phenomenal. However, catching that lightning in a bottle is a bitch.

AJ speaks of looking to NE for a pattern to imitate in running an NFL club, yet seems to do very little in that mold.

I seriously doubt that he pays any attention to OL beef & can only pray to the football gods that he looks at the DL.

I can easily see OLB or CB (particularly if Jammer's time has come to move to safety) as our 1st round pick this year. That is, if we don't crap the bed with VJ & go WR in the 1st. (insert your own pissed off/exasperated/WTF?? smilie here)

In the AFC there are only 3 teams that maintain consistent playoff caliber teams. We had one for most of 10 years. Overall that's pretty good but, like D-Bag Canapa said winning "the watered down afc west" shouldn't be hard to achieve. We reached a new level of mediocrity.

and the ownership of this team are happy campers with that. They have no intention of ever competing for a SB.

One play away from the backup. We need a team that can win games without him.
