    By Jay Posner

With two weeks to go, the Chargers could finish as high as No. 2 in the AFC or miss the playoffs altogether.

The former would take a virtual miracle, while the latter could be reality as early as Saturday afternoon.

That’s right, if the Chargers lose at Kansas City on Saturday, they will be eliminated from playoff contention if Jacksonville wins at Houston and Pittsburgh wins at Cleveland. That’s the worst-case scenario.

The best-case scenario would be a Chargers victory in Kansas City and losses by Denver, Jacksonville and Pittsburgh – or, at the least, a loss by one of those teams. In that situation, the Chargers would control their own destiny on the final weekend: If they beat Denver, they would be in the playoffs, either as AFC West champs or as a wild-card team.

Even if the Chargers lose one of their final two games, they still could sneak into the playoffs should Jacksonville or Pittsburgh lose twice.

Finally, consider this: Should the Jaguars beat Houston on Saturday, they would be in the playoffs and would have little or no motivation the final weekend, something that could work in the Chargers’ favor if it created a three-way tie.

    THE SCENARIOS

To win the AFC West, the Chargers must:
Beat Kansas City and Denver AND
Denver must lose vs. Oakland (and at Chargers)

To qualify as a wild card, the Chargers must:
Beat Kansas City and Denver AND
Jacksonville must lose once (at Houston or vs. Tennessee) OR
Pittsburgh must lose once (at Cleveland or vs. Detroit)

(In the first case, Chargers would beat Jaguars on better AFC record. Or, if all three finish 11-5, Chargers would advance with better AFC record than Jaguars and Steelers. In the second case, Chargers would have better overall record than Steelers.)

    OR

Should the Chargers lose to Kansas City or Denver, they still could qualify as a wild card. Here’s how:

Jacksonville must lose twice (at Houston and vs. Tennessee) OR
Pittsburgh must lose twice (at Cleveland and vs. Detroit)

(In first case, Chargers would beat Jaguars on better AFC record. In second case, Chargers would have better overall record than Steelers. If there’s a tie involving Chargers and Chiefs at 10-6, Chargers would stay alive due to better record among common opponents.)

Your wishing and hoping that we don't make it, because the Colts are scared to face the Bolts in the playoffs.

I don't see the Colts winning it this year. Not after the death of Dungy's son. But maybe I'm wrong and the Colts will go on a tear and win it all for the Dungy family.
