    Kevin Acee

Norv Turner has helped steer the Chargers through a disappointing season and into the playoffs. The coach took time to talk to Union-Tribune Chargers beat writer Kevin Acee after Thursday's practice about his team, his brain, his coaching performance and what it takes to run his offense.

    Q. How has the season gone?

    A. Obviously this has been as challenging a season as you could go through. The thing I'll say is our coaches and our players have responded to that challenge.

    Q. Are you familiar with the Web sites nomorenorv.com and firenorv.net?

    A. I know they're there, but I haven't had my kids teach me how to log on to them.

    Q. During the season do you have time to take your wife to dinner?

    A. Yeah, Nancy and I go to dinner. Half the weekends you're not home. And the only time I get home early enough to do anything is Friday night, and we find a way to entertain ourselves.

    Q. When you go out, what is the fans' reaction to you?

    A. People are very respectful. The response was great when we had success. Face to face and one on one, people are very respectful. And there are some people – there's not a lot, but there are people – that are knowledgeable enough to understand this situation and the process you have to go through.

    Q. You said this has been as challenging a year as it could have been. Is there anything other than your experiences and history in this league that has helped you get through it?

    A. Yeah. Obviously, the ownership and our management and our players. If you're in this situation and you don't have a strong group of guys, then it can become impossible. And I never felt this came close to being impossible.

    Q. Did you coach better in December?

    A. Because of our situation, because of the change (at defensive coordinator) halfway through the year, there were some things we were able to do better as it went on. We had some things go our way as it went on. We went six games without creating a turnover. We went six games without forcing (many) three-and-outs in the middle of the year. Those are tough times. That's hard on everyone on the football team. We've flipped that. We're creating three-and-outs. We're creating turnovers.

    Q. Some of the guys have said your speeches were better in December.

    A. Y'know, they were probably listening better in December. I'm not big on that. I don't regard anything as a speech. I don't believe you're giving a speech to a group of guys you're with every day.

    Q. So why are you a better team now?

    A. Everyone looks for a reason why it's better. We are a lot better physically in the last eight weeks than we were in the first eight weeks. We had some guys who had to deal with their own physical issue, getting themselves into a position physically and mentally where they could go play at a high level. When you have to deal with that, sometime you're not able to deal with all the things that are involved in all the things that go into winning.

    Q. I know you didn't want to go 4-8, but can you speak to your philosophy of peaking and having your players physically and mentally ready in December?

    A. That's the whole process. There is a fine line. You can do too much early in terms of having your guys physically and mentally worn out. I thought we had an outstanding training camp for the guys who were able to go through it and practice every day. We just had too many guys who weren't able to practice in camp because physically they weren't cleared to practice.

    Q. Because of that, and then with the injuries early, I always got the feeling, not that you knew you would struggle, but maybe you had a more realistic outlook on the beginning of the season than the rest of us.

    A. Yeah, but saying that, we were a play away from beating Carolina, which is the No. 2 seed in the NFC, and we were every bit as physical in that game as they were. We didn't play good pass defense in that game, and we didn't play good defense in the Denver game, but we're a minute away from winning that game.

    Q. In the Indianapolis game in November, do you think you cost your team a chance to win with the timeout you took late?

    A. Obviously when you make a call like that ... I was trying to give us the best chance to win. I didn't want them to get the ball back. When it wasn't fourth-and-a-foot, it was fourth-and-2, there was no solution other than to kick (the field goal). I believe they would have taken the timeout there to save the time, and as it turned out I believe the result would have been the same. Certainly, it could have cost us. I said the day after I wish I hadn't called the timeout, but I called it for good reason.

    Q. When games are close, all of us can second-guess a coach.

    A. And rightfully so.

    Q. How much do you second-guess yourself after a game?

    A. I don't prefer to call it second-guessing. You get in situations, and you have a plan. You have two or three things in each situation you feel good about. You're not only playing but adjusting to what they're doing. We had a play on a third down in Tampa. We were in a pretty good rhythm. I was guessing along with their defensive coordinator pretty good. Three in a row, we hit it right and we converted three in a row. I thought he'd make an adjustment, and he didn't. And we ended up not getting a third down (conversion). So you say, 'I outsmarted myself.' But that's part of the game. You're not going to hit on every one. I call about 1,000 plays a year. I've been doing it since 1991, so that's a lot of calls. I've called some bad ones that end up being touchdowns. And I've called some good ones that you say, 'It was perfect play,' and it ended up being an interception.

    Q. Are you winging it out there (calling plays)?

    A. We have a plan, but you go by what you see. That's part of your experience. I know there are some times Philip (Rivers) looks up and says, 'Where'd that one come from?' but I think we're on the same wavelength enough now that he knows why it is coming.

    Q. You know that some of the (players) refer to you as the guy from “A Beautiful Mind”, because your head is ...

    A. (Laugh). I'm sure they do. I'm sure they refer to me in a lot of ways.

    Q. The “Beautiful Mind” thing makes me laugh because I do get the impression that you're a couple thoughts ahead of what is coming out of your mouth?

    A. Yeah, I guess sometimes.

    Q. What does it mean that you're 0-5 this season against teams that are in the playoffs?

    A. You have to address it, you have to look at it when it's brought to your attention. I'd be concerned if the other teams were averaging 38 points and we were averaging 10 in those games. I look at matchups. I look at who they played the week before, who we played the week before, the type of game it was. It's not daunting to me. The most important reason why is I think our players are not overly affected by that. They know we played these guys six weeks ago, and it was a three-point game. We played them three times in the past 18 months, and the three games have been decided by nine points. They know to be in that position we have to play our best, because they're obviously one of the best teams in the league. But I don't think it's a deal where someone says, 'You're 0-5 against playoff teams, and you can't beat this group.'

    Q. The fourth-and-1 at the 16 against Denver, I don't think you go for that earlier in the year ...

    A. No, we would have. We were fourth-and-2 in Buffalo and we weren't playing very well. We're going to manage those decisions. We did it in the Raider game. I don't think that's out of character. A lot of it is who you're playing and all the things that are involved.

    Q. How much does Darren Sproles continue to surprise you?

    A. I haven't been surprised since the Detroit game a year ago. He's playing with such great confidence, and we have found ways to get him the ball. It's hard. I asked him about the touchdown (against Denver), 'Were they yelling screen?' He said, 'They yell screen every time I go in.' We've had to work a lot of different ways to create looks for him to get the ball.

    Q. Has he become better between the tackles this year?

    A. I noticed it in training camp. He's a more patient runner. That comes from getting opportunities.

    Q. Can he be an every-down back?

    A. I don't think anyone should ever put limitations on him. You have to be concerned about durability and what you're asking him to do, but he has obviously shown he can hold up and be a physical player in this league.

    Q. You have called plays every year you've been a head coach. Would you ever hire a guy to call offensive plays?

    A. Yeah, I think there is a right time and place to do that. There might be a point where if I trust someone I might have them do it. There are guys on our staff that are capable of doing it. But there is a certain way I like to see things done. Some of the things we do, you have to be willing to be on the edge, you have to be able to handle criticism. You have to handle the fact it may not be the most popular thing to do. But if you're going to be at your best sometimes you have to do that. Some guys are more willing to do that than others.

    Q. So I shouldn't look for that to happen in 2009?

    A. No, not this year.

    Q. Your star player, LaDainian Tomlinson, obviously he's pleased with the balance of the offense now ...

    A. Those comments – and I'm not talking about LT; I'm talking about the perception out there – it's just interesting to me. I've dealt with it. I've been in this offense all the way back. It's the same offense we ran with the Rams back in '87, so it's going on 30 years. We always had that deal with Eric Dickerson. When we won, the balance was great. When we didn't, the balance was bad. That's what I'm talking about – being able to handle all those things that go on. ... There are times I don't think we've thrown the ball enough based on the way people are playing us. ... I'd love to be able to line up and have them play you in a look every down where you can run or pass. And I'd like to be good enough that it doesn't matter what they're playing. You can say, 'We're going to run it, and they can't stop us.'”

Missing question... Norv, why do you suck?!!

Lets review the last 4 wins...

Raiders: They're the Raiders, need I say anymore?
Chiefs: We sucked up to the last three minutes of that game.
Bucs: They couldn't beat the Raiders at home in a game they needed for the playoffs. Need I say anymore?
Broncos: They couldn't close it out against the Raiders or the Bills (at home). Need I say anymore?

Now were in the playoffs and it was fun to see us beat up the Raiders and Broncos BUT, now were going against good teams. Lets hope the better team shows up.

    GO CHARGERS!!! :bolt:

8-8 is NOT an accomplishment. In fact, it sucks!!
When was that last time you saw fans of any other team celebrating an 8-8 season? For us in particular, all we can say is "thank God our division sucks."

Now if we advance in the playoffs... THAT'S ACCOMPLISHMENT!!!! :bolt:
If we finish at one and done, I'm sure you'll be celebrating all week with BIFSA with your "Yeah Norv" banners.

If we advance in the play offs I half expect you to make up some tripe about how it was just against the Colts and Norv sucks.

This team just did what no other team in the history of the NFL has ever done! It won the division and made the play offs at 8-8! Not only that but we saw a Denver colapse and had to be perfect in December to make it happen. Further we came from behind to beat a hard playing Chiefs team, rained points down on the Bucs like they havent seen in years, drummed the Donkies out of a head coach, and extended our historical winning streak against the Raiders... All shameful happenings in your book apparently.

Yet all of that is not good enough for you. You want to rain on it and tell us all how pittiful it is. Well I am not jumpin on your pitty wagon. I am not all depressed as you are, I am not looking for excuses to tarnish what is acomplished. I am not ashamed that we are in at 8-8. In fact I am damn proud that this team did not colapse upon itself and miss everything as the could, and possibly should have!

So you go have a personal pity party that the team is in the playoffs at 8-8! Me, I am going to celebrate every fuquing minute of it, and every team we knock out is going to make it even better. At one and done, we have already knocked Denver and New England out! That is sweet indeed. I dont think we will stop at just Denver and new England either. You apparently do, since you think we played only scrubs to get in.

Sorry your so bound up in hate and pitty that you cant share it the moment!

Your scalp is polluting your brain.
There is no pity, it's just reality. We're in the playoffs and we have a reason to be happy. As long as there's a pulse, there's a chance, and that's how the regular season ended.

BOTTOM LINE... We beat up on bad teams (and just barely escaped one). Now we need to win against the good teams.
And it ALL begins with a win over the Ponies!!! :bolt:

B4L...... I have seen a positive change in play calling in the last four weeks. And yes I still think Norv sucks but we are where we are with Norv. Lets just hope for the best now and be as positive as we can while we are still alive. B4L you could be a donk fan.

And yes we have played some suspect lowly teams but they wanted to win and we prevailed and the donks sucked. So lets be happy where we are now it could be worse.

    GO CHARGERS!!! :bolt:

Concudan we are in the plyoffs for many reasons not all of them had to do with the Chargers play.

I am cooking chicken tonight with steamed rice and broccoli..enough with the cut dows and I am guilty of this also. Opinion is just that, saying is everyone has an ahole just like their opinion.

Anybody want my recipe start a cooking thread and it will be there.

in 5 years, i *****ed far less about Morty than you have in the past 2 years about Norv. When the team was winning, i laid off of marty, unlike you who even find a reason to ***** when the team is winning.

Also, i didnt go out of my way to start a thread every day about how much i didnt like him.

But its ok, if you want to try to justify your *****ing, go right ahead, but like i said, its probably time for you to find a new team, cause Norv is gonna be here next year, and if you dont find a new team, you'll probably give yourself a heart attack before the start of next year
