Qualcomm Stadium after the rain storms.
A day before the Poinsettia Bowl between San Diego State University and Navy is set to be played there, the Qualcomm Stadium playing field was under water Wednesday morning because of the rain that gave the region a heavy soaking this week.

    Qualcomm Stadium after the rainstorm
Pictures of the field posted on Twitter elicited comments like "Whoa" and "Unreal" and jokes like "Navy should feel right at home. You may even see some seals at work."

The pictures also elicited this comment from the official Poinsettia Bowl account, "We've got pumps in right now to drain the water. Everything will go on as scheduled. Crazy pics though!!"

Later, Poinsettia Bowl executive director Bruce Binkowski sought to dampen speculation the soaked field wouldn't be ready for Thursday's game.

“The field will be ready," he said. "The ground crew will be working all night long. There might be a few soft spots where water sunk in, but the field will be ready.”

Binkowski advised fans to arrive extra early and take the trolley for maximum convenience because parts of the parking lot had also flooded.

Darren Pudgil, spokesman for Mayor Jerry Sanders, said that workers began trying to pump out the water after the rain let up in the morning. Shortly after 11 a.m., Pudgil said, "They're working to drain it as quickly as possible."

Pudgil said a tarp has been on the field since Thursday but that 50 percent of the field was submerged. The Poinsettia Bowl is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Asked if there is a chance the field wouldn't be drained in time for the big bowl game, Pudgil said, "A lot of that depends on the weather and how much rainfall we may still receive."

He added, "The field is being affectionately called Lake Murphy right now."

The flooding here is just another thing why this Stadium needs to be torn down. Mission Valley was made from a river bottom, and the big guy above is looking at taking it back! In Minneapolis they could not play 2 NFL games because of the roof and snow, here if we had a game we could not play because of the flood.

    Coincidence?

Boy, that should slow the post and flag patterns. Aztec wideouts will need waterwings.

I'm sure it'd be bigger news if we had to play there this week.

Losing a home game at this point of the season would be huge.

I use to tailgate in the same area, right under the trolley, and it doesn't help the flooding that the city covers/blocks all the storm drains so the rain water has no water has no where to go

The Field looks freaking great for the Bowl game...what a great job by the folks who worked 24hrs to pump out the water. The tarps that were on the field must of really helped...kept it from getting saturated and no silt to remove. Awesome job.
